Fire at the Newark Celluloid works in New Jersey caused about 200000 dollars in damage Sunday night. The blaze began in the converting department and spread rapidly through nearby three story buildings on West Scott Darcy Magazine and West Feery streets. Fourteen people were injured and hospitalized as residents lost their belongings.
A Meridian Mississippi feud erupts with Jim Finner and Aleck Webb exchanging two revolvers. Webb dies from three gunshot wounds after fleeing into a jewelry store. Finner is killed by a citizen after similar shots. The struggle includes Webb’s daughter and Finner’s daughter resisting arrest.
Washington dispatch reports Secretary Albert, via Representative Grosvenor, orders a full inquiry into the New York World account alleging neglect in a hospital for Private Hugh Parrett of the Eighth Infantry. The report cites Sgt Rich’s arrest and questions about regimental command and care of soldiers at Montauk.
Twenty thousand trade unionists marched in Chicago on Labor Day along Jackson Boulevard and Michigan Avenue to the First Regiment armory, with Mayor Harrison reviewing. The day later featured river-resort excursions and organized leisure as traditional parade elements were reduced.
The First Mississippi volunteers report to the war department an alleged attempt by Private J A Kinney of Company H to kill Colonel Govan at Chickamauga. Kinney held the colonel at gunpoint in his tent after taps, was arrested after an attempted shooting of the adjutant, and stood trial at 8 this morning. The regiment is bound for Lauderale Springs on Thursday.
A well to do ice dealer John Hills his wife and sister in law Miss Mary Conlin were poisoned by whisky sent to their home. The drink caused a powerful illness within minutes and the sister in law Miss Conlin may die. A second package contained toilet water. Northern Manchester farm struck by lightning wrecking the house. Secretary Hester reports New Orleans cotton exchange annual statement shows crop and value for 1897 98.
