A report from Jacksonville describes furloughs of 65 sick in the Fiftieth Iowa Regiment and updates on ill soldiers. Camp Wikoff reports 800 patients, space shortages, and tent needs. President McKinley spent five hours at Camp Wikoff Montauk Point touring hospitals and cantonments and delivering a speech to infantry. He reviewed cavalry, directed regulars to return east of the Mississippi, and visited General Shafter and Lieutenant Prado’s tents while expressing sympathy for a dying soldier and noting a Typhoid fever death in the local company.
President McKinley lauded Camp Wikoff troops of the Fifth army corps for two months of campaigns in which assault and siege yielded far-reaching gains. He praised Manila heroes at a lunch with General Wheeler and staff and noted care for the wounded in hospitals. The scene closed with a train departure and a final remark about the soldiers' splendid spirit. The dispatch also mentions the death of Corporal Harry V. Cary of Kankakee, Illinois.

Other dispatches report health figures from Santiago and a flag of truce incident at Rio Piedras. A Kansas boy was struck and killed by lightning near Lawrence.
Newport News Virginia September reports describe a battleship named Illinois to be launched for national defense. Details note twelve 6 inch and two 18 inch guns, heavy armor, double turret design, and an estimated speed of 16 knots.
