National Guard troops fired over the heads of a violent mob and bayoneted several civilians as about 200 black power marchers faced an all white Cicero crowd. The two hour clash ended with a pitched battle, injuries to multiple civilians, and officers sweeping the streets as guards and police protected the marchers and Chicago boundary.
President Johnson in Detroit at AFL CIO event warns unions against seeking large wage gains that could hurt prosperity. He calls for self restraint from labor and business, notes inflation as the threat, and hints at possible tax steps. Johnson rededicates to repealing Taft Hartley section 14B, in memory of Sen. Pat McNamara.
United Press International reports a Labor Day weekend total of 21 traffic deaths across Iowa, tying the 1954 record. Victims include Rev Earl Edgerton and wife Dolly near Grinnell, and Harold Roberts fatally struck in Sioux City. Multiple injuries and charges of negligent driving accompany other crashes on U.S. routes 34 64 and 59.
United Press International reports a Labor Day weekend toll surpassing 400, with 423 fatalities by 2 a.m. EDT. California leads with 40 deaths, while Alaska Montana New Hampshire Rhode Island show no fatalities. The National Safety Council estimates total highway deaths between 530 and 630 for the 75-hour holiday.
A tropical storm named Greta in the Atlantic is strengthening toward hurricane force. The Miami Weather Bureau said Greta could become a hurricane later today as it moves northwest about 12 to 18 hours, centered roughly 385 miles northeast of San Juan and 1200 miles east of Miami. Winds near the center reach 59 mph with 100 mile radius to the north and 50 to the south.
Paris dispatch reports Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara urging Red China leaders to listen and understand that U S military action in Vietnam poses no heat to China. He warned Washington will continue to beef up forces in Vietnam to whatever levels are needed to meet the Communist threat even at risk of war with Communist China.
UPI reports US military spokesmen confirm four Air Force aircraft downed in North Viet Nam while attacking Hanoi linked routes and supply lines. Three fighters and one escort plane listed missing. one crew rescued after crash near Dong Co. Civilian casualties include a village hit when a Caribou transport crashed northeast of Saigon.
Washington officials say Communists must take the initiative in Vietnam as de Gaulle presses for a timetable. Assistant Secretary William P. Bundy rejects timed withdrawal while noting North Vietnam escalates the war by infiltrating troops and supplies. He says bombing raids are restrained and there is no sign Hanoi seeks peace. Bundy predicts South Vietnam elections on Sept 12 could prove a constitutional turn, noting neutralists’ exclusion spark concerns.
Travelers report Red Guard youths roving Canton house to house after clandestine radio station and arms cache discoveries. Banks fear withdrawals as residents flee, shops close after 8 pm and red guards patrol streets. Lin Piao allegedly leads the movement with Mao’s blessing as the cultural revolution intensifies.
