Athenia Sinking Signals U Boat Attack and Losses

Survivors of the British liner Athenia describe a submarine torpedo and two shells that killed about ninety aboard as lifeboats filled. Miss Martha Bennett of Iowa told U.S. reporters of the panic and injuries among the 400 survivors in Glasgow and Galway.

Thrills Fill Legion Labor Day Show at Blattner Field

Leon Beatty and the American Legion post staged a crowd pleasing Labor Day program at Blattner field drawing about 2,500. Eddie Anderson of Grinnell won the Weedstakes race after a close 20 laps. Ace and Babe Lillard provided stunts including a car through a blazing board wall. Proceeds topped $100 for the post with Auxiliaries adding about $50.

15 Prisoners In County Jail Crowding Quarters

Sheriff H. M. Putnam said today that Washington county jail holds 15 prisoners the largest number in two years. Six young men were added over Labor Day weekend. At arraignments before Justices V. B. Eldridge and J. E. Bovee Hilbert Speaks and Robert Amlong were ordered held to the grand jury on larceny of domestic animals for allegedly stealing 60 pound pigs from B.

Traffic Signal at Underpass Approved in City Meeting

City council approved plans for a traffic actuated signal at the North Second Avenue and East Fifth Street intersection just north of the underpass. The state highway commission will review the proposal before installation at no city cost. Plans are on file at city hall. A sewer project along West Madison Street west from Sunset Park was discussed. the sewer committee was instructed to survey with an engineer before a final decision.

Children Back To Class Rooms In Washington

Most of Washington's school age children returned to classes today after a long vacation that began last June. Stewart school opening was delayed so its students will have to wait longer for full use. Junior high enrollment reached 170 with 89 in seventh grade and 81 in eighth. principal Miss Ethel McCreeny noted a small rise from last year. Elementary figures were not yet released as Supt. B E A Ralston said to wait for Stewart school opening.

Brighton men jailed over default charge

Four young men from the Brighton community were sentenced to ten days in the county jail after pleading guilty to a default charge. Sheriff Putnam and Justice of the Peace R. W. Fill coordinated the arrests, and the pigs were recovered and returned to the owner.

New Physical Instructor for Girls in Schools

Virginia Morris of Bartlesville Oklahoma has accepted the position as head of physical education for girls in Washington public schools. Meda Fisher resigned to take a higher post in Cicero public schools as assistant dean of women and PE teacher. Morris begins next Monday and will oversee junior college and high school girls as well as fourth to sixth grade classes.

Grain prices rise on wartime demand in Chicago markets

Grain prices on the Chicago board of trade surged to the limit today as frantic wartime demand lifted wheat by five cents corn by four and oats by three. Directors of the Chicago grain exchange held a special meeting and limited September futures.

Water Battle Delights Onlookers With Fire Department Squirt

A lively water battle on the east side of the square drew hundreds of spectators as Washington fire department members used city hose streams to send a rubber ball deep into the opposing territory. No decisive winner emerged though John Custers team appeared to have the edge after a tug of war preceding the rousing contest.

Fire Damages Barn by West Main with Minor Loss

Firemen responded to a West Main Street Braunshausen home where a roof barn fire started near a bonefire. The blaze was extinguished with relatively little damage and no injuries reported.
