Ford warns of constitutional crisis if no electoral majority
House Republican leader Gerald Ford warned of a possible constitutional crisis if no presidential candidate wins a majority of electoral votes on November 5. He said a GOP House victory could push a constitutional amendment to replace the electoral college as early as the 91st Congress. Ford cited third party bids by Wallace and a potential fourth party candidate as risking a House decision in January, with history recalling 1800 and 1824 outcomes.
