Algona Democrat Named to Iowa Supreme Court
Luke Linnan of Algona became the first Democrat on the Iowa Supreme Court in 15 years. Appointed by Gov. Her schel Loveless to fill the unexpired term after Justice W. A. Washington street work progresses on city improvement project
Street improvement work continues this week with asphalt surfacing on the business district squares. Crews completed surfacing from West Madison to the new swimming pool parking lot and prepared West Washington Street blocks from Avenue B to D for resurfacing. Larsen Construction Co. poured the first blocks of a new sidewalk on the north side of the square and began corner curbs and alley entrances on North Second Avenue. South Ninth curb and gutter work advances from McCleery-Cumming factors to Case Field. Iowa Road Builders prepared the St. James Catholic Church parking lot for surfacing and planned to begin today.

First Day Enrollment in Washington Public Schools
On opening day 1,487 students enrolled in Washington public schools, up 44 from last year’s 1,443. Washington High School led with 476 students, followed by Lincoln 405, Stewart 402, and Junior High 204. The district opened midweek with a half day and then full classes today.

Hail Damage and Storm Strikes Across Eastern Iowa
A band of thunderstorms swept central and eastern Iowa causing major damage in Cedar Rapids where lightning struck telephone lines and disrupted airport CAA equipment. Wage Increases For City Workers Approved By Council
City council approved wage adjustments for Washington employees with raises of five to ten percent to correct pay scales.
