Stewart School picture day set for Tuesday

Stewart PTA Boosters announce school pictures at Stewart School Washington on Tuesday September 7. All students will have class and individual pictures with no money collected at the time. A color package of three 2x5 inch portraits and 12 billfolds sells for 3.50. 8x10 class photos cost 1 for black and white or 3 for color. Family portraits may be taken 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday with payment at the session.

Legion gains building for Leon Beatty American Legion post

Washington post officers signed papers Thursday to obtain a building behind Jones Funeral Home as its new home. The post has gathered pledges totaling 26000 dollars to buy the former Marshall Furniture warehouse, with October 1 possession. Washington Senior High Band magazine sale aims for 3500

Members of the Washington Senior High School Band launched a magazine subscription drive to September 20 to raise 3500 for the band fund. Through QSP, Carl L. Berst guides students under adviser Robert Shepherd, with 70 plus students soliciting orders from parents and friends. New and renewal subscriptions credit to the band fund, which keeps a 40 percent return. The program is guaranteed and has helped other groups raise large sums in the past.

Deputy Fireshots At Home In Cedar Rapids

In Cedar Rapids Iowa three shots were fired from a passing car at Linn County deputy Gene Parks outside his home Friday night. The patrol car was heavily damaged with a rear window blown out but Parks was uninjured and briefly pursued the vehicle before a flat tire halted pursuit.

Nation and Iowa see unemployment shifts in August report

UPI reports the US unemployment rate rose to 7.9 percent in August, the highest this year, with 7.5 million out of work. Teen unemployment jumped to 19.7 percent as labor force grew. In Iowa, unemployment held at 5.0 percent for the third straight month, with 57,300 unemployed and 1,281,600 employed, aided by stable agriculture and retail gains.

Ainsworth man hurt in pickup crash near Riverside

An 18 year old Ainsworth man Perry H Nicholson was hospitalized with what were believed to be minor injuries after his pickup left a gravel road and plunged into a ditch while turning onto county highway 661. He was charged with failure to have control of his vehicle. Three passengers escaped injury. The crash occurred about 10 50 p.m. 1 000 damage. Earlier, Oliver Carlson 69 of Moline Illinois was treated for possible injuries after a two car collision at highway 1 and 22 in Kalona.
