Most retail businesses in Washington will close Monday for Labor Day. A few stores run holiday hours. Government and private offices banks and the post office also close. No city or rural mail delivery. lobby open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.. mail dispatched at 4:15 p.m. The Evening Journal appears at noon Monday.
A head on collision on highway one near Washington at 6 05 p m hospitalized three people from Washington and Wellman. Corliss A Crawford 19 and Vernie and Roberta Goodwin 19 and 20 were treated at Washington County Hospital with injuries. Benita K Goodwin 19 of Wellman was treated and released. Damage totaled 6500 with charges pending.
The body pulled from Lake McBride near a swimming area is identified as 21 year old Diminah Barasa of Kenya. She had been missing since Monday night after disappearing from a Scattergood School picnic in West Branch. Medical authorities ruled the death an accidental drowning.
Polk County District Judge Anthony Critelli heard final testimony on a suit by the Iowa Mental Health Association seeking to block a new medium security prison on the grounds of the Mental Health Institute at Mount Pleasant. Attorneys argued the jail would violate patients rights and harm treatment, while a Justice Department psychiatrist and an Iowa doctor said the prison would have no effect on care.
Des Moines figures from the state comptroller show 496,739 Democrats and 434,095 Republicans, with Democrats expanding their edge by about 11,000 since last year. GOP Co-chair Margaret McDonald says Republicans lag due to registration effort and vows to mount a strong comeback.

He noted methods to remove water from milkweed sap to use as fuel.

In Bellflower California two men were arrested on suspicion of murdering Mrs Seigman and kidnapping her three children from Los Alamitos last week. William Paul Gullet and Ronald Lewis Ewing were taken to Orange County jail for arraignment in Santa Ana on charges of kidnapping and murder.
Washington lawmakers push a tax reform bill to extend lower rates for individuals and corporations. House Ways and Means Chair Al Ullman said it would reach President Ford by September 15. The bill has run about three years in hearings and drafting. A House Senate conference committee has spent days reconciling differences and clearing noncontroversial sections.
