Ky threatens to destroy Thieu to block dictatorship

In Saigon vice president Nguyen Cao Ky warned he may destroy President Nguyen Van Thieu to prevent a dictatorship in South Vietnam as Thieu stood as the sole candidate opening the presidential race. Ky said Thieu could be overthrown before the October 3 vote, stressing that the Vietnamese desire freedom and democracy.

Labor Day closures and holiday schedules in Washington

Local stores and offices plan Labor Day closures with some businesses offering special hours. County tax official to appeal 11 percent valuation increase

Washington County tax assessor Ernie Lund will appeal a countywide 11 percent rise in residential valuations for unincorporated areas at a Sept. 13 Department of Revenue hearing in Des Moines. He urges accepting 1971 valuations and revaluing remaining properties by Jan. 1, 1972 to avoid inequities.

Washington Community Chest Budgets 36015 For Fall Campaign

The Washington Community Chest plans a fall drive to raise 36015 in gifts and pledges. Clem Dold chairs the budget, Lam Messer leads as campaign chairman, division chiefs are appointed, and Red Feather volunteers will solicit in October with dates to be announced. DeWayne Adams was omitted from newly announced directors.

Ruling voids Johnson County grand jury indictments

District Court Judge Harold Vietor declared the Johnson County grand jury illegal with no authority to extend its term beyond 1970. Indictments against eight individuals tied to bid and contract misconduct were dismissed as the grand jury ceased to exist and the next panel must continue the investigation using prior testimony. The eight include four county officials and four contractors. several named firms and individuals are listed.
