A Des Moines column reports total enlistments across all services reaching 325 in one day, surpassing the previous 253. Navy led with 182 recruits, including 66 sworn in at a mass enlistment in Osage, Ta. Army added 99, Marines 27, Coast Guard 17.
President Francis Johnson said the Iowa Farm Bureau federation has named its resolutions committee for the Des Moines convention in November. Allan B. Kline of Vinton will head the panel with James R. Howard of Clemons joining in an advisory capacity, bringing World War I experience to advise on the current emergency.
Ottumwa Iron Works managers asked a war labor board representative to negotiate with striking workers. Roy Hartlein of the ILO said the walkout aimed to push the company to bargain on a union shop and wage increases. President J. W. Neasham noted the walkout followed a proposed new contract.

Facial cuts and head injuries were reported after a police squad car lost control while pursuing a speeding vehicle. Bruhl, the pursuing officer, failed brakes as the car hit a stone wall on Wednesday.
C V Crull of the Chamber of Commerce announced that Washington businesses will close next Monday for Labor Day. Food stores retail shops barber shops lumber yards and produce houses will shut down. Drug stores open noon to five, restaurants and the library close as usual, and courthouse offices also close. Post Office will be closed to mail delivery with stamp sales only 8 to 10 AM.

The next pilot training class at Washington airport and junior college will begin Monday September 14 instead of September 7. Graduation for the current class is set for Saturday afternoon at three at the airport.
