Washington marks Labor Day with most businesses and government offices closed. Schools have no classes, the post office suspends mail delivery except city special deliver. The Journal prints at noon as rain totals reach 2 ½ inches overnight with lingering clouds and possible showers.
Richard Colby reports a stray Saint Bernard, about five to six months old and 50 pounds, found Thursday two miles north of town by Stan Knapp family. The pup is friendly but dirty and thin, with no tags. It is housed at the United Presbyterian Home and interested families may call.
Pharmacists win a 60 day extension for child resistant caps on aspirin and other drugs under the Poison Prevention Packaging Act of 1970 due to supply delays. FDA data show high child fatalities from accidental poisoning and two packaging tests ensure caps are tough for kids but usable by adults. The change affects prescriptions and non prescription aspirin products with broader coverage planned through 1973.
North Vietnam announced it will release three captured American pilots, including a man held over four years, to a U.S. social organization, in a move timed to Sept 2 1972. The Defense Department confirmed their POW status as efforts to later reveal more details.

Tropical storm Carrie moved slowly north-northwest over the Atlantic about 300 miles east of the Virginia Capes. Winds near the center were about 45 mph with heavier surf and minor coastal flooding from the Carolinas to southern New England as the storm edged northward.

Police in Fort Worth Texas hold a 65 year old ex convict for questioning in the sex slaying of 85 year old Mary Emma Davis. Investigators say the man matched a description of a caller seen at the door before the killing, and lie detector tests prompted pursuit of other suspects.
