Faubus Says U.S. Will Use Federal Marshals at Little Rock

Gov. Orval Faubus announced information that the federal government plans a force of deputy marshals and possibly military reserves to enforce school integration at Central High. He warned he will resist forced integration and may close the school if the Supreme Court orders Negroes admitted.

Jackson youth confesses shooting his girlfriend

John Hixon 17 confessed after abandoning Carolyn Waldron 16 on a Waterloo area trail. He said after a breakup talk he fired twice from a .30 rifle as she walked away, then claimed he feared losing her to another boy. Prosecutors expected murder charges. he was jailed in Jackson.

Irving man captures in High-Speed Kidnap Ride

Irving, Texas, man who kidnapped police sergeant Harvey S. Derrick at Irving pulled a pistol, forced a patrol car ride to 90 mph plus, firing a shotgun at pursuing units. Derrick described a dramatic roadblock stop five miles west of this East Texas oil town on U S 80 as officers closed in. Police say charges likely to be filed. motive undetermined and suspect believed drunk.

Two Escape Injuries When Car Hits Cows

ROWAN Iowa UPI Miss Janice Mulder 18 Primghar and her mother escaped serious injury when their car crashed into a herd of 40 cows wandering onto Iowa 3 about 11 miles east of Rowan. Two cows were killed and two more had to be destroyed. Deputy Sheriff Ben Speedling commended Miss Mulder for her handling after the collision.

Funeral services set for James Patrick Colton 66 at Stacy funeral home Columbus Junction Iowa. Colton born October 28 1891 in Union township Louisa county to Thomas and Rosa Morgan Colton married February 7 1923 Leva Leola Brown. Holiday toll falls short of last year's Labor Day total

UPI tally shows 422 traffic deaths from the Labor Day weekend plus 109 drownings 12 plane crash deaths and 78 other accidents totaling 621. California 47 deaths leads states with Texas New York Ohio each at 24 pétrole interpretations. Rhode Island Vermont Washington Wyoming posted perfect records as the Safety Council had estimated 420 deaths.

Complete Surfacing On Washington Business Streets

Workmen progressed on resurfacing the city business district streets. Asphaltic concrete was applied on Main Street near the YMCA and on South Iowa Avenue between Jefferson and Madison. Iowa Road Builders and Larsen Construction crews prepared curbs on North Second and South Ninth Avenues and poured gutters near Case Field. Sidewalk work continued on the north side of the square.

County Legionaires Plan Annual Picnic

Washington County American Legion officers will be installed at the county picnic at Lake Darling Youth Center Sunday September 14 at 1 pm. A potluck dinner follows at 1 then entertainment from county Legion posts. Brighton Legion post hosts providing pop and coffee.

Fall Schedule at YMCA Now Underway

Washington YMCA announces the fall activity schedule after a building clean-up and reopen. Secretary James Anderson and assistant Paul McLain oversaw the plan with work by Karl Blatter, Mark Hensel, Gordon Morris, and McLain. The schedule features school-year swimmer times, semi-private lessons, family night swims, and Saturday sessions for beginners to advanced swimmers, with non-member access and reservations for eight-week boys lessons starting Sept. 6.

Municipal Pool to Stay Open Through September 15

Washingtons municipal swimming pool will remain open through Sept 15. It was set to close after last night water show, but a decision yesterday extended operations by two weeks. Hours are 4 30 to 9 pm on weekdays and regular weekend hours.

Nine Die on Iowa Highways in Labor Day Toll Near Prediction

Nine persons were killed on Iowa roads over the Labor Day weekend despite safety pleas. Victims include David M. Finch, Louis Anderson, Nels Lockren, Frances Coltman, Emmett McHale, Winifred Wright, Thomas Matthewson, David Mullane, and Wayne Ross. Several deaths occurred in out-of-state accidents involving Iowans.

Accidental Westward Challenge Ends in Tragedy

In Davenport Iowa Robert M Walker 19 of Louisville Kentucky died from a self described accident during a western draw challenge. Robert T Colgan 19 also of Louisville said the gun fired hitting Walker in the heart as the two believed their weapons unloaded. William G Gordon 24 of Springfield Massachusetts slept through the incident. Nine guns found at the house. Colgan and Gordon held for questioning. no charges yet.

Woman borrows Bible and robs benefactor in Iowa

In Newton Iowa an 80 year old man John Burgen said a woman asked to borrow his Bible for church then followed him to his bedroom and left with the book after arranging a later return. He later found his billfold missing and another billfold hidden with tissue paper.

4 H record books of members are due at the county extension office. Extension director Tom Robb said farm project 4 H club leaders will meet to grade the books within the next few days.

Washington Man's Car Leaves Road Near Here

Karel Wayne Farrier, 24, of 115 North Second Avenue in Washington, was treated at Washington County Hospital for injuries after his car left a county road southeast of Washington early Sunday. The crash, one fourth mile east of the Marsh Koehler residence in Marion township, happened when Farrier failed to turn at a T intersection. The car was not damaged and injuries were not believed serious, with final x rays pending.
