Crawfordsville reports see residents traveling to Montezuma Waterloo and Des Moines for conferences fairs and work. Families move into new homes attend state fairs or visit relatives as several locals head to events and duties across Iowa.
Former Secretary of Agriculture E. T. Meredith disputed Col. Smith W. Brookhart’s claim that a 1920 Federal Reserve meeting harmed farmers. Brookhart accused secrecy and Wall Street influence while Meredith argued he was not at the meeting and defended the agricultural sector against deflation policies and financial maneuvers.
On September 2 at Sauk Village near Rock Island Illinois old settlers gathered on the western battleground of the revolt to honor frontier troops from the Revolutionary era. Justice Floyd Thompson urged preserving the site as a state memorial park marking the early clashes and the Clarke expedition against tribes attacking settlers.

On August twenty seventh Mr and Mrs J B Pressley hosted the Hamil family reunion at the shhoohouse lawn Ainsworth. Twenty six attended a picnic dinner with hot chicken potatoes and picnic fare. Only four of the original Hamil family were present with the Keiper branch strongly represented. Out of town guests included Mrs Lee Rhee Batty Lee and Roy Whiteman with son Con.
A community picnic is set for Saturday at the Hardscrabble school house northwest of Washington. Plans include a homecoming style gathering with a dinner program of talks readings and music inviting former residents to attend. Also advertised are hosiery and fall flannels at the 98c Store with typical bargain pricing.
Miss Charlotte Foster of Plainfield Iowa will be principal of the Lincoln school succeeding Miss Gertrude Kendall who resigned due to ill health after over twenty years in Washington schools. Foster a graduate of Iowa State Teachers College Cedar Falls was junior high principal at Dysart for three years under Supt J H Peet. Mrs Will Jones of Washington will substitute as history teacher at the junior high until a permanent hire is made. All other Washington school positions are filled and teachers begin arriving tomorrow with a conference at the high school Saturday afternoon.
Mrs Margaret Hinderman, department president, hailed the Iowa American Legion auxiliary for over 26700 spent on veterans and families and disabled veterans. Poppy sales yielded 263000 flower emblems. The 22000 member count was the largest in the nation with speakers including Mrs Carl Schlotterbeck Spirit Lake Gilbert Schuster W L Moore and Mrs Martha McGowan.
Four persons were killed and more than a dozen injured when two interurban passenger cars collided on the Detroit United Railway line north of Monroe Michigan. The cars telescope upon impact and the dead include three men and a girl not yet identified.
A tolerably fair day drew a good sized crowd to the annual Dutch Creek fair despite a shower last night. Col. S. W. Brookhart and Alex Miller are slated to speak this afternoon. A Washington band concert and a 8 30 pageant on Dutch Creek township history are planned for the evening.

Funds will satisfy judgments by the American German claims commission, with the treasury getting 21 2 percent of the German reparations. Fifty Red Oak Canning Company workers staged a strike after roasters hurled roasting ears at coworkers who refused to walk out. The plant manager abandoned operations and called police to prevent further disorder, leading to a shutdown.

Twenty two passengers on a Chicago motor bus en route from Davenport to Chicago escaped injury when the vehicle ran off the road east of Ottawa NL and plunged over a five foot embankment into a field.
John Kramer, wanted on a Washington county arrest warrant, was located yesterday afternoon by Oskaloosa police at his home. He is in serious condition under a physician’s care following a gravel truck wreck west of town. He eluded a train by alighting at an earlier stop and was later found at his home. The sheriff says officers will monitor him until able to return to the county.
The Town conference of the Methodist Episcopal church opened with routine business. Ninety five ministers attended and six new ministers were admitted. Reports from district superintendents were presented, Bishop Keeney of Omaha presided, and the memorial sermon was preached by Rev. W. H. Munster of Morning Sun.
Lieutenant Cyrus K. Bettis, an army flier injured in a Pennsylvania crash, died at Walter Reed hospital. Death was caused by spinal meningitis that developed after the injury, after he was moved to Walter Reed from Bellefonte.
Mr and Mrs Juliis Conger their daughter and Marvin Warnock are at the state fair this week. The group toured exhibits and planned evening events as the fair drew crowds.
Mrs Clara Margaret McFarland born September 19 1856 in Washington county died at 4 30 this morning at her Crawfordsville home after months of illness. She lived in the county all her life and was married to George K McFarland September 1 1875. Survived by husband three children Lettie Gardner Jessie Gararer and Lorin McFarland two children preceded her in death. Funeral at 1 pm tomorrow at home with Goodin funeral parlors service at 3 pm in Crawfordsville led by Rev John D P Kern and Rev Porter. Interment Woodlawn cemetery.
Evelyn Quarno at age 23 was fined 100 dollars for marrying yesterday. The tale echoes a pledge from the Bachelorettes Club formed five years earlier by 12 members to impose a 100 dollar fine on any member who wed. She wed William J. Russo, an attorney, becoming the fifth to pay.

Brighton announces the new school year begins September 6 with a corps of teachers led by Superintendent C J Christersen. Brighton High School lists Rev B Pr James as principal along with mathematics and history instructor Miss Alverta Carter from Abingdon Illinois, and other faculty assignments across grades and departments. The roster includes O H Story athletic coach, Alma Beck in home economics and normal training, Elizabeth Evans English and Latin, Mrs eo Hh Christensen music, Miss Florence Beggs Grade Principal, Zora Bristow Junior High, L J Huffman director, and several teachers from Red Oak Packwood and Pleasant Plain for 1st and 2nd grade positions.
Frank Szaywa, son of Mr and Mrs Frank Szaywa, was injured this morning on West Second Street when a small calibre gun discharged while tucked in his trousers. The wound to his thigh is not expected to be serious, and no bullet hole was found. clothing was scorched by the blast.
Indianapolis Ind September 2 Rivers and streams in Indiana swelled after a torrential rainstorm that struck the central portion of the state. The storm dumped a record 4.51 inches in the eastern region within an hour before midnight, threatening to flood thousands of acres of farmland.
The army dirigible TC-5 completed a flight from Langley Field Virginia to Scott Field Illinois passing over Belpre Athens and Washington Courthouse Ohio. It crossed southern Ohio at speed covering 71 miles between Athens and Washington Courthouse in about 1 hour 15 minutes. It was the first inland government airship flight since the Shenandoah disaster and refueled at Wilbur Wright field Dayton before continuing to Scott Field.
