A Greyhound driver left a bus of passengers stranded for two and a half hours at a railroad crossing in Oakland due to a blinking warning signal. He cited Public Utility Commission rules as the reason. Police and railroad workers eventually moved a boxcar blocking the signal, allowing the bus to continue.
Israeli jets downed two Egyptian planes after intruding into Israeli airspace in a swift clash. An attack on Khan Yunis inside Egyptian territory followed, targeting the district Egyptian army headquarters as part of a broader retaliation amid renewed Gaza border tensions and stalled peace talks.
Winnipeg reports a violent anti Communist demonstration as nine Russian farm experts arrived from Swift Current. About 300 protesters shouted down the visitors and handed out anti Communist leaflets while police cordoned the crowd protecting the Soviet officials who were whisked to the Fort Garry Hotel.
Rev Bartholomew Protestant chaplain at University hospital in Iowa City spoke at the Kiwanis gathering. He explained he is on call through the Iowa Council of Churches and visits only the most critical patients due to limited capacity. A delay of several weeks is reported in the Washington retirement home project due to a shipment failure of window frames. A special order was issued at the start, but nationwide demand prevented immediate production. The frames are due soon and brickwork will resume, with the main building still aimed for rapid completion.
Jacob Edward Hubble 93 a resident of Wellman and Kinross communities for 37 years died Wednesday at Brown Rest Home Wellman where he had been a patient three years. Funeral services set for 1 p m Saturday at Daytonville Mennonite church burial Fairview Cemetery. He was born May 16 1862 son of Edward and Nancy Jane Brown Hubble. He married Isabelle Ellen Wilkenson March 21 1886 she died 1914. In 1939 he married Rhoda Jones who died 1950. Survived by three sons Harry Henry and Simon a daughter Nancy Bell one brother Charles Hubble nine grandchildren 17 great grandchildren and 25 great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter Bertha and a son Ralph.
Forty American Cancer Society volunteers from seven counties will attend a leadership conference at the Legion Hall in Washington on Tuesday September 20. Mrs J H Jones will host the one day session with ACS staff and county representatives from Keokuk Louisa Jefferson Henry Des Moines Lee and Washington. The goal is to promote knowledge of cancer and protective measures. An educational flip chart and new materials will be demonstrated and discussed for outreach through newspapers radio and television.
Former President Harry Truman followed medical advice and cancelled his West Coast speaking engagements. Dr. Wallace Graham stated the heat influenced the decision and hinted he may resume the schedule when temperatures cool. Truman denied reports of anger at Edwin W. Pauley, calling them untrue.
A U S Naval weather recording instrument more than five feet long crashed through the roof of a Boone home when its supporting silver balloon broke. A ceiling joist kept it from falling into the dining room. officers and firefighters removed the device and notified the University of Minnesota where it landed amid plaster damage.
Two break ins were reported in the county Tuesday night. George White's feed store at Riverside was entered with about $10 stolen. At Holy Trinity Catholic School in Richmond a radio phonograph combination and $7 were taken after a screen was removed from a second story window.
Mrs Myrtie Alice McReynolds 79 died at Washington County Hospital after surgery and a six week stay. Services 3 p m Saturday at Powell funeral home Wellman with Rev E M Buehler. Burial Taylor cemetery south of Wellman. Survived by two sons Albert Wellman and William W McReynolds Lincoln Neb. and sister Mrs Florence Flood Burlington.
Three men died in a headon crash on US 6 east of Newton. Delmar M. Smith 25 Colfax died at the scene, Charles J Dorazio 31 Whittier California died en route, Arthur Ying Fong Yeung 31 Oakland California died later at Skiff Hospital. Dorazio reportedly dozed, causing impact. Police identified the California men as Georgetown dentistry students. The collision happened around 6 45 a m on an open highway.
Washington reports from the State Department say Vienna refugee accounts suggest Russia may free five American prisoners next week instead of three. Names include Kumis Hopkins Sparks and Grisham, with uncertainty over Hopkins identity and Sparks and Grisham unconfirmed by Moscow.

About 3,000 CIO United Auto Workers began a strike against Maytag Co in Newton Iowa at midnight after a federal mediator failed to secure a contract extension Pickets stood at two plants in Newton and a third in Hampton Workers not eligible crossed lines with no incident The company said operations are closed and paychecks for strikers will be issued Friday at plant gates The firm reported peak four week shipments and an unusual orders influx as a safeguard against a work stoppage
A 57 year old Iowa lecturer George B. Dewey was arrested in St. Petersburg Florida and charged with obtaining money under false pretenses from Grace Potter Miller the widow of Dr. Joe Miller. Miller mortgaged two farms for about 80000 dollars to fund proposed motel ventures in Daytona Beach Florida and a church in Denver Colorado.
An announcement by Bill Sitler states reservations for the stag party at the Washington Golf and Country Club Friday night must be phoned in by tonight unless patrons are permanently registered. Tiny Biggs' orchestra from Ft. Madison will return September 17 to play for the dance.
