Miss Carrie Smyth returned last evening from Minneapolis where she has been enjoying several weeks vacation. Frank Martin and family of Lexington visited in the city today.
A sheriff on a bicycle collided with a wagon and was dragged briefly under the horses. He escaped with minor bruises. Prairie chicken hunting draws many local athletes and families to Muscatine area. Secretary Glasgow clarifies fair race horse entries, noting two horses were added to meet four entries per race.
The Graham theatre will open the season next Monday with Frank FB Long's large company in Trilby reportedly. The company travels with special scenery for each play and the opera house will be thoroughly renovated by Lewis Wallace for ten days. Seat sale starts Thursday morning and ladies attend free.
At the Christian church a phonograph concert is planned for Friday evening September 4. Admission is 20 cents for adults and 10 cents for children under twelve. The Edison Spring Phonograph with motor replaces electric drive, capable of handling 1500 listeners. The C R J and P will replace the Eldon bridge with a substantial new one after recent rain trouble.
Wednesday evening Miss Catherine Mc Kilveen missionary will deliver an address on Foreign Missions at the First Baptist church. All are cordially invited. Also note church groups plan the upcoming regular Sunday school picnic of the Christian church on Thursday. Deafness cure ad promises one hundred dollars for any case cured by Hall's Catarrh Cure and urges readers to send for circulars from I J Cheney and Co Toledo Ohio.
E. C. Carris & Co. offers Karl's Clover Root Tea claimed to cure headaches and nervous disorders with rapid relief. The advertisement presents the product as a universal remedy for these conditions.
Carlos C Cadwell died this morning at 3 at his daughter S T Smiths home. Born January 25 1809 in Lenox Madison County New York he was a Presbyterian with literary interests. He leaves a wife and five children. Funeral tomorrow at the Smith residence East Washington with Rev Logue officiating. Interment Ely Grove Cemetery.
Mrs Norton hosted a Saturday musicale at her home with piano and vocal numbers by Misses Aura Rich Daisy Hull Jessie Jeffrey Bessie Eichelberger Ethel Winter Eva Hunt and Messrs Chas Howe and Charlie Burroughs. Mrs Norton sang two French songs and a sacred solo accompanied by Eva Hunt. Charlie Burroughs played violin. About fifty pupils attended and a biweekly society is planned with future performers Myrtle Jeffrey Harlie Berdo Sappho Beamer and others.
Rev Charles Brown, longtime pastor of the Charlestown Congregational church, will assume duties at the Oakland California Congregational church. The large west coast church, with 1100 to 1200 members, offers a $5000 annual salary plus moving expenses and a start date around October 1. This marks high regard for his preaching ability.
Mrs S Pickens and children express gratitude to those who assisted after a death. John Stone of Ainsworth visited the city today. A man and a bulky horse amused north and east siders last night. Stewart, a young man, traded for the horse and started home. The horse and cart ended at the Washington National Bank porch. Miller and Daugherty liabilities run about 40000 with assets yet to be determined. J W Farwell has attached their goods here and at Waterloo for due amounts.
