A rifle-wielding hijacker on a Los Angeles to San Francisco TWA flight forced landing in Denver then New York, taking a hostage and keeping three crew aboard. FBI and police monitored the jet as it departed for Bangor, Maine, with authorities deeming the threat serious but avoiding confrontation.
A short memo from a Washington area source thanks the recipient for a library gift describing it as a fine gesture. It notes that patients will appreciate the kindness and is signed WEJ.
A forecast for Iowa shows light snow in the northern areas tonight, while the south remains cloudy with rain or drizzle in the southeast. Mrs. Edsall Brown of the Washington Public Library announced a $400 gift presented by Stephen Wiggers for the Washington County Health Improvement Association. Funds will buy health related books, two book trucks, and new titles for convalescents and children, expanding library service to Washington County Hospital and Extended Care Annex patients. The Improvement Association, sponsor for Blue Cross Blue Shield in the county, has about 1200 members.
The Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled that the Mary Jo Kopechne inquest will be closed to the public and news media. The decision rejected Senator Kennedy’s bid for broader ground rules while allowing witnesses to be accompanied by counsel and potentially cross examined at the presiding judge’s discretion. The ruling, in a 17 page decision, does not set a date for the inquest.
