Hijacker captured on birthday in Rome after TWA jet hijack
A 20th birthday hijack caper ended when Lance Cpl. Raffaele Minichiello, the AWOL Marine from Seattle, was found in a suburban forest south of Rome after steering a TWA Boeing 707 from California to Rome. He leaped from a car, fled into the countryside, and was captured by Rome authorities following a large manhunt. The U.S. Attorney charged him with air piracy, kidnapping, and interference. Minichiello had seized control midflight and demanded Naples, where his father lives, before the plane landed safely at Leonardo da Vinci airport. He faces a minimum 20 years for air piracy. The incident, the year’s first major hijack, ended with mixed testimonies from passengers and crew about his demeanor.
