The Forest City school bond election on a $25 000 bond for a $45 000 school failed by 130 votes 396 in favor 266 opposed falling 60 per cent margin. Disputes over 10 spoiled ballots and teacher voting eligibility clouded results prompting another vote on Nov 26.
Adam Michel sustained several gashes near the eye when a quail flew through his windshield while he drove. A dead bird landed on his dashboard after the crash.
Homer Peterson, 30, drowned between here and Ellsworth in Goose Lake after an epileptic attack caused him to fall in. His father Homer Veterson Randall, a merchant, could not reach him. The son was not married.

In Des Moines 12 year old Max Colgan tells how Bernie the St Bernard set out to see the world but forgot his toothbrush and returned home. Max, son of Dr. D C Colgan, says he brushes Bernie's teeth daily since puppyhood and trusted the dog would come back.
Washington county faces a corn husker influx from Missouri as outside workers accept lower pay, depriving local men of jobs. C. E. Andres of the national employment office reports 27 qualified applicants awaiting work while farmers hire cheaper out of state labor to harvest corn. Home workers seek four cents per bushel versus three and a half offered by Missourians, sparking a clash over loyalty and wages.
The Putnam county sheriff is expected here today or tomorrow to fetch Harry Gadberry of Powersville Missouri. He will be taken to Unionville to face charges of stealing number plates from a parked car on October 25. Frank Gadberry, arrested with him, was released as not wanted for any crime.

Thousands of Iowa school teachers travel by rail and car to Des Moines for the opening of the annual state convention. A record attendance of about 10 000 is expected as the first general assembly begins at ten this morning and schools close for the week for the event.
County Agent W J Rouda said no word from contest managers on Dwight Hoyle Washington county corn husking champion eligibility for the Davenport state contest near Friday. Only twenty huskers are admitted and selection is based on county contest records. Rouda doubts Hoyle will compete.
A delayed dispatch reports about two thousand people killed by a munition dump explosion at Lianchoo near Shanghai on October 31. The event is described in press dispatches as a massive disaster with high casualty figures.
Supt J H Peet of Cedar Falls visited last night at the home of Ma and Mrs W F Bickel and called at the high school this morning before joining a teachers meeting in Des Moines. His daughter Audrey accompanied him for vacation. Mrs Peet is visiting a sister.
About 65 people attended the first practice for the union choir presentation of The Messiah. The rehearsal was held last night at the United Presbyterian church, with Miss Carolyn Hamilton directing.
A strong quake hit Helena Montana on October 31 causing extensive damage to the city. Buildings toppled and cars were crushed by falling walls with two men reportedly buried in a brewery ruin.
A United Air Lines transport plane crashed five miles south of Cheyenne last night and burst into flames. Two pilots and two mechanics died in the fiery wreck. Local authorities reported four fatalities and initiated investigations into the crash scene.

Ethiopian reports say Italian forces push toward Dessus from Assab and across the Danakit desert toward the railway.
Crawfordsville October announces Reverend W G Robertson will leave Friday to serve as pastor at the United Presbyterian Church in Winterset beginning Sabbath. He will remain there at least until April first while his family stays here this winter. Friends wish him a successful pastorate.

Cast includes Aunt Ophelia played by Mrs Art Rathmel and Cousin Sukey by Mrs Harry Drake among others. Admission is ten cents and hot lunch will be served. previous showings at Living Lake school and Gracehill were successful.
