A Waterloo columnist notes a resident plans to leave for Florida and entrusts locals with feeding the homeless wanderers who gather in a hobo jungle near the city limits. He says the act has given him pleasure this past summer and worries who will care for the men during cold months.
Des Moines reports a $500 reward for the slayer of Charles A. Englehart of Davenport. Englehart was found unconscious in his car September 22 and died the next day from blows to the head. The reward is split between his brother Harry and the state via Governor Clyde Herring.
In Viola Cedar Rapids Edwin Gorius aged 6 and John Rinella aged 5 were burned on their faces when a classmate tossed acid from a school window. The incident left Edwin at risk of losing sight in his right eye and the source of the soldering acid is unknown.
At Des Moines meeting of the Iowa State Teachers association the first color motion picture of the University of Iowa campus will premiere. Filmed this fall by Lee W. Cochran of the visual instruction department, the feature showcases campus scenes for teachers in attendance.
Joy Hodges, 20, former Des Moines choir singer, signed a Lloyd's policy in Hollywood that guarantees $125000 yearly for three years and covers her life for $250000. The contract bars marriage smoking swearing drinking and requires maintaining good publicity in film work.
Fort Dodge Iowa. School Superintendent E F Carberry of Clare offered a 175 pound boulder as Exhibit A in a 75 dollar claim against Webster County. He brought the rock to the courthouse when filing his damages claim saying his car stuck on a county road.
Marquette a town of 814 residents boasts a long list of missing facilities. It has no resident clergy or doctor, no dentist or lawyer, no undertaker or cemetery, and only one arrest in seven years. It lacks stores and services including furniture, jewelry, shoe, blacksmith, harness, printing, implement, newspaper, movie, photography, book, grain elevator, clothing, liquor, coal dealers, creamery or produce house.
Davenport report says two boys in a Halloween prank tied a rope to the Dollerhide home door and pulled it shut when Mrs. Dollerhide answered. The boys’ identities were not learned.
A. J. Lawler, laborer at Titonka, suffocated when an eight foot ditch collapsed trapping him. William Larson, also of Titonka, was buried to the waist but freed. Bystanders dug Lawler out and tried artificial respiration to revive him.
Audubon Iowa Elmer Carlsen aged 24 husked 2 824 pounds of corn net in 80 minutes on Tuesday to set a world record for corn husking. This marks the third time in eight days that a Towan has raised the world mark in this event.
Dwight Hoyle of Cedar Township claimed the 1935 Washington county corn husking title by a wide margin outpacing Elmer Aller and Cecil Davison. Hoyle averaged 159 ears per 100 pounds with one of the field’s two purest lands, while the state contest judges decide if he qualifies for Friday’s Davenport event.
Frank Gadberry of Powersville was freed after inspectors learned he had no connection to the Powersville post office burglary. Virgil Starr of Washington was also released for lack of involvement, while Harry Gadberry remained jailed amid suspicions he was linked to a gang and possible Missouri license plate theft. Sheriff Putnam awaits guidance from Missouri authorities on charges.
Iowa to launch a five station police radio network by November 9 linking Atlantic and Fairfield with Des Moines and other cities. The system will broadcast bulletins within minutes to county sheriffs, city police, state patrol cruisers, and BI vehicles, expanding statewide coverage.

Seventeen Foursquare Gospel churches in Iowa send young people to a Saturday convention in which Rev. Myron Sackett from Cedar Rapids Rev. Sidney Correll district superintendent and Rev. Caswell of Des Moines speak. Correll shows world mission trip films and Caswell speaks in the afternoon. Evening addresses feature Correll and Sackett with music by visiting youth. Friday service canceled due to convention. Pauline Coffee revival meetings continue nightly all week. Public invited.
Cloyce Rathmel was arrested by Sheriff Harold M. Putnam and jailed awaiting a preliminary hearing on a chicken theft charge. He is accused of stealing multiple chickens from Scott Wilcox’s premises.
The department of agriculture is expected to fix a 45 cent per bushel loan on the 1935 corn crop. Announcement of the rate will likely come within the next two days, according to authoritative sources.
The 5th annual state youth conference will be at Trinity Methodist Church Cedar Rapids Friday and Saturday. Local youths are set to attend with programs from 8:30 am to late Saturday afternoon, including addresses discussions social events and a banquet Friday at 6 pm. Rural counties receive tax replacement from Iowa three point system while urban counties cover the bill. In the first year 85 counties with towns over 5 000 paid 8 296 000 in traceable sales and income taxes and received 3 605 000 in refunds. Urban counties show refunds of 3 639 000 against 3 453 000 contributed by under 5 000 residents.

Lester B. Krabill of Washington was elected to membership in the State Historical Society of Iowa at the regular board meeting in Iowa City. Dr. J. A. Nye of Ida Grove and Joseph B. Wells of St. Louis were elected, and F. O. Bock of Davenport enrolled as a life member.

The local Y's Men's club received an elaborate peace pipe from Central European clubs during last night’s regular meeting. County physicians held their regular meeting last night with dinner at the Congress hotel at 6 30 followed by the business session and talks. Dr F P McNamara of Dubuque delivered the evening scientific address on pathology focusing on cancer. Attending were Dr 8 J Lewis of Columbus Junction and Dr F M Roberts of Wayland.
The department of commerce reports that the United States sold more goods to Italy in September this year than in the same month last year. The surge came as Italy prepared for war with Ethiopia, just before President Roosevelt's neutrality proclamation.
Oct 30 Wright Field Ohio reports the crash of a giant air force bomber during tests. Major Ployer Hill died from skull fracture and burns. Lieutenant Leonard Harman and Lieutenant R K Giovanni helped rescue five crew, dragging two to safety as flames enveloped the wreck. All survivors were hospitalized.
