Iowa City will host its final Democratic rally Thursday evening after a banquet at the American Legion Hall. State Treasurer Leo J. Wegman is slated to be the speaker, with a torch-light parade scheduled to follow the event.
Iowa game officials report over 1500 tons of food pledged for wild fowl and other game this fall. Some already gathered and more promised to ensure birds and other animals are fed until they grow large enough to be hunted.
EF J. Lewis of St Louis vanished Monday in Davenport after he allegedly fleeced nearly a score of men and women in a job racket. He posed as a merchant and rented three store buildings using credit for fixtures and hired sales staff at 2.65 each before disappearing.
Dubuque Iowa hosts the 1935 meeting of the Iowa Master Shop Rebuilders after the Davenport convention. Hugh Wilson of Dubuque is elected president and William Miller of Davenport is vice president.
Burlington Edwin Manning known as the fiery mayor of Ottumwa will speak at a Des Moines county Young Republican meeting at Eagleshell Friday evening. Manning defied state orders to leave office during a gubernatorial bid, prevailed in court, won a confidence vote, then withdrew from the race and supported fellow party candidates with several speeches in the district.
Fort Dodee Howard Smith a 21 year old Des Moines man was held to the Webster county grand jury on manslaughter charges with a $1500 bond. He pleaded not guilty and is accused of driving the bread truck that struck Thomas Porter a 54 year old man killed last week by a driver who did not stop.
Twenty one homecomers appeared in Iowa City police court today for intoxication and disturbing the peace during the Homecoming celebration. Most defendants, from out of town, paid fines before Justice B F Carter acting for Police Judge H W Westermark.
Jefferson county coroner Dr. A. McGuire reports no inquest will be held into the death of Andrew Anderson aged 84. He was struck and killed at Lockridge when he walked onto the path of freight No. 62 near the crossing east of the passenger depot as the train approached.
Depositors of the closed Iowa Savings Bank in Fort Dodge received 60000 on Monday as a 7 percent payment. Two other northwest Iowa banks Calhoun County Bank of Manson and State Bank of Laurens paid 16 percent each. The three payments totaled 770000.
Chairman C F Boller announced a closing rally for the county campaign to be held Monday evening at 7 30 in the city hall. Washington county candidates on the congressional and state tickets will speak along with Congressman F E C Richer and Mrs A R Miller secretary of state. The committee expects a large turnout for what may be the fall’s biggest political gathering. A separate rally is planned Friday evening in Columbus Junction high school auditorium at eight o clock with FE G Dunn US district attorney for the northern district of Iowa as speaker.
Chairman G E Mace announced two more sessions in various districts for party organization during the past two weeks. Tonight the Prenublicans meet at the Seventy-six Center schoolhouse in that township. Friday Rubie and Clay township gathering will be at Rubie. A Kalona meeting yesterday drew good attendance.
Police investigated a report that Addie Giver and Artie Ross two waitresses from Topeka were kidnapped and taken to Iowa. The women, in a car with Kansas plates, left a note at a Griswold Iowa filling station asking that their landlady be notified.
The Fortnightly club will host Dr Edward A Steiner to discuss The Conflict Between Culture and Civilization in the community room. Steiner, Grinnell College professor and immigration authority, speaks at 7 30 p m with light refreshments after a brief business meeting.
The Iowa State Commission mailed 739 old age pension checks to approved applicants. Checks total about $12.50 each, within the $25 monthly maximum, with payments due Nov. 1. The system uses a four stage review, and retroactive payment covers November for all pre November 1 applicants. The commission anticipated future costs near $2.9 million next year.
In Conneaut Ohio during mild early fall weather popcorn erupted on the stalk at C. C. Bennetts farm causing crop curiosity. Farmers puzzled by the heat source but concluded the ears were heat stored from summer.
Adolph Martens of Keswick was arraigned on charges of killing his wife Stella and step-daughter Maxine Abel. He pled not guilty and was held on $26,000 bonds for each count. Trial scheduled for December term. Bodies found after his disappearance. officers report a note Martens allegedly wrote confessing the crime. Martens engaged five attorneys.
Three Harper children were injured while on their way to Sigourney to school when their car plunged over an embankment after parking another car driven by Mrs A Teinke. Retty J. Shaffer suffered severe cuts and injuries, with George Hannavers and Velda Klett also hurt.
In Ottumwa on October 31 Mrs. Louisa Anderson aged 86 died when the home of her son in law J. K. Bradley burned. Mr and Mrs Bradley and children escaped but the elderly woman was fatally affected by the blaze or smoke.
Des Moines reports that most Iowa corn remained safe after the first general killing frost on Oct. 28. Federal forecaster Charles De Reed noted the late frost aided husking and drying, with bulk husking ending in the southwest while slower in the north and east due to moisture.
A crowd watched as headmaster Ed Sullivan and a railway crew reran engine No. 1966 onto the rails after a derailment near North Marion avenue by Wilson Coal Yard and Washington Lumber. The mishap damaged crossing planks, and a wrecker was needed to finish the rail realignment this morning.
The Wellman county P T A meeting featured a 23 piece orchestra and a solo by Mrs. T A Michels with a keynote on mothers leisure. Speakers included Legh W Soule on Training for the Future and E E Blythe reporting on the Des Moines convention with plans to adapt national materials for local units.
President Roosevelt announced that the federal government will restore the five percent pay reduction beginning July 1. He said budget estimates will include eliminating the reduction as the cost of living is expected to rise by midyear.
Mr and Mrs A A Clenn Dennis of Keota were here on business yesterday.
He indicated that he looks for the cost of living to rise substantially, coupled with an increase in values. The remarks imply broad inflationary pressure and higher asset prices.
Crown Point Indiana report says murder kidnapping graft and falsification charges follow the jail escape of John Dillinger. Investigators allege an $1,800 bribe freed him and grand jury is asked to indict state officials connected to the incident amid campaign activity. Governor Paul McNutt vows further disclosures.
