Starvation Corners provides music with admission at $1.50 per person and all ages welcome. Washington firemen battled a five acre cornfield blaze southeast of town, praise for prompt response. Senator Culvers Iowa representative Patrick O Connor to hold public office hours October 31 in Washington County courthouse Board of Supervisors room. Community Choir rehearsals begin Nov 2 for The Story of Christmas at Washington United Methodist Church Now.
A quiet weather pattern continues with clear skies tonight and lows in the low to mid 30s. Thursday brings sunny skies and warmer temperatures with highs around the low 60s and southeast winds 5 to 10 mph.
Ken McCormick 48, a carpenter, and Raymond Moyer 58, a highway foreman, seek the Third Ward seat in the Nov 4 election. McCormick pushes active industry recruitment to expand services and lower taxes while Moyer calls for financing reform and more street repair over new construction.
The Washington County Extension Council announced seven township meetings to elect council members. Meetings run Nov 3 in Seventy-Six, Nov 6, 10, 13, 14, 17, and 20 at listed sites with 4 H family night programs planned at five meetings. Nomination committees will present two candidates per township.
Iowa Association of Counties urged passage of a charter home rule bill for county governments in Des Moines. Do nald L. Cleveland said the measure, a top priority for 1976, would be refined this session as counties seek local control over land use and budgeting while opposing new commissions and a property tax freeze. The group called for review of tax equalization orders, funding flexibility, higher district court costs, and social services funding to meet rising needs. Rep. Hargrave urged considering broader county operation impacts on people, not just efficiency.
A Treasury study shows Iowa and national levels of food stamp errors involve overissuance and underpayment. In Iowa 26.6 percent received too many stamps and 14.8 percent were ineligible. Massachusetts records the highest abuse at 98 percent. Officials blame heavy caseloads, filing gaps, and transition to computerized systems for miscounts.
Four Washington High School students, Allen Kron Janis Loder Joe Morotti and Mary Ellen Reed, plus Danny Hanze of Swedesburg and Linda Bush of Washington, were named to All-State ensembles. The chorus, a 600-voice group, will perform at Hilton Coliseum Ames on Saturday Nov 22 with selections under Iowa High School Music Association oversight.
District Court Judge Ira F. Morrison sentenced Dean M. Lintz of Washington to six months in county jail for possessing a controlled substance and placed him on one year probation after suspending another six month term for a second drug possession count. Faced with guilty pleas on Oct. 6, the prosecutor dropped charges of stolen property and drug delivery.
Edward A. Conner of 1202 E Main St is resting comfortably at Washington County Hospital after a cardiac arrest Tuesday evening. Attending physician Dr G J Nemmers and County Ambulance Service personnel, Karl Jones and Ralph Miller, arrived within three minutes, performed CPR, and used a defibrillator to restore a normal heartbeat before he was rushed to ICU where his condition remains stable. Dr CS Tam commended the ambulance team and hospital staff for their quick, coordinated response.
