McCarthy Offers Lukewarm Endorsement of Humphrey
Senator Eugene J. McCarthy released a brief Capitol statement indicating he will vote for Hubert Humphrey on November 5 and asks followers to do the same. He will not seek re election to the Senate in 1970 or pursue the Democratic presidential nomination in 1972. He cites differences on Vietnam and political reform, but argues Humphrey offers a better chance to end the war and ease tensions versus Nixon. Aide Jerry Eller had suggested a qualified endorsement earlier.
