Rights victory for Kennedy in civil rights vote
The House Judiciary Committee cleared a moderate civil rights bill for President Kennedy, rejecting a stronger measure 19-15 and 20-14 on substituting a White House compromise. The vote, chaired by Emanuel Celler, faced derision from some Southern members who accused railroading. The compromise limits federal intervention to race religion or national origin cases and restricts voting rights actions to federal elections with three judge courts. Local obituaries note the Kalona area deaths of Mrs Noah M. Yoger and Magdalena Hochstedler with family survivors listed.

Inquiry Opens Into Robert Baker Outside Interests
Senate Rules Committee chaired by B Everett Jordan opened an inquiry into former Senate Democratic Secretary Robert G. Baker’s outside business dealings including a vending machine partnership, a Maryland motel stake, a Washington travel agency, a Capitol Hill area townhouse, and a North Carolina motel venture. The probe sidestepped questions about Ellen Rometsch, a German woman tied to alleged high living in Washington, saying no criminal information had been found yet. The inquiry seeks potential conflicts of interest under federal law while noting the Justice Department will not prejudice any ensuing case.
