Reasons for Washington County corn crop boom in 1963
An editor notes a record corn harvest in Washington County and credits several factors. Favorable weather, ideal spring subsoil moisture, dry May and June promoting deeper roots, wet July and August with even moisture, soil structure after deep winter freezing, plus higher fertilization, insecticide use, better varieties, increased plant populations, and improved farmer crop management. County land devoted to corn averages vary by township, with Cedar as a high 92 bushel average in 1962 and hail likely reducing 1963 yields.
