A Humboldt man Huech Edwards lost all fingers of one hand when his hand was caught in a corn husker machine. The column notes such accidents recur each fall and warns workers to take care around dangerous huskers.
Dr. R. C. Knott of Sioux City lost a finger while hunting but as a southpaw he will continue surgical duties. The incident initially suggested his career might end in delicate work, yet he adapts to operate left handed and press on with his practice.
A cigarette dropped on a cushion in an auto belonging to W. J. Doyle of Davenport is believed to have started a garage fire Saturday. The blaze destroyed Doyle’s car and another owned by Herbert Gerhardt of Davenport, with total losses estimated at 359 dollars.
Robert D. Gage, 41, of Spencer, Iowa, a former assistant receiver for the First National bank at Sioux Rapids, faced federal court saturday over alleged misappropriation of bank debtors funds. He is accused of embezzling 1500 dollars, claiming 45600 dollars in receiver ship collections from 1932 to 1935, while PD Bourne denied any authorization to deduct traveling expenses from the collections.
Harold M. Cooper, chairman of the Iowa liquor control commission, foresees a net profit of at least 1 million dollars for the first year based on the initial four months. August’s financials show a 10 percent profit on 252,511 dollars in total business as new stores expand volume toward an estimated 10 million dollars annually.
Gilmore City teenager Gilmore City Melvin Roberts 18 was killed and George Foxby 21 injured when an auto overturned in a ditch after four pheasants struck the windshield Sunday. Officers reported the driver swerved reacting to the birds.
Red Oak-Teslie Graham 5 percent fatally injured Saturday when a buzz saw flew loose from a power machine and struck him on the head. He died en route to a hospital. Graham and two other men were sawing wood two miles north of here. He leaves a widow and four children.
Congressman A. Wilward announced Saturday that construction will begin immediately on a Cedar river dam at Parkersburg Iowa to hold water levels and form an artificial lake. The $560,000 project will create jobs for Butler county unemployed with funding from the Emergency Relief Administration.
A Sioux City suit claims A. B. Wirsig lost his wife Lenore's affection due to Clifford Sanborn's interference. Wirsig seeks 25004 as damages after a 20 year marriage.
Des Moines Iowa reports the forecast for October 29 to November 3 for the upper Mississippi and lower Missouri valleys and the northern and central great plains. Generally fair with occasional light precipitation in northern areas and temperatures near normal.
Two men robbed the John Norton filling station at Riverside near junctions 161 and 22 around noon. They took about 25 dollars after one bandit with a gun demanded cash, then fled east on primary road 22 toward Muscatine. A gray suited tall man and a brown suited short man were described. the victim provided limited details.
In Sonora California a banquet honors Averill Harriman for a record setting train run that broke a 30 year old record. The piece credits railroad workers as efficient and says the achievement should wake up managers and benefit the entire country as railroads improve.
William W. Mengershausen died at his Wellman home Saturday night at 11 82. Funeral services scheduled for Tuesday at the Methodist church with Rev. Thomas Osborn presiding. Burial in Wellman cemetery. He was a longtime Hicks barber who could not work after a stroke three years ago and belonged to multiple fraternal orders. Survived by wife Ethel Dunlavy, married May 1, 1922, and two children Frances Magsine and Richard.
At Eicher School one mile north of Noble a Saturday night rally gathered over fifty residents to hear Congressman C. Eicher and Democratic hopefuls discuss national policy. Speakers highlighted farm issues, self determination, and fair farmer returns, with county leaders introducing candidate lineups for state and local offices.
Spence Miller of Washington is held in the Ringgold county jail at Mt. Ayr on a forgery charge after notification to the sheriff's office last night.
Mr. Mengershausen born November 21, 1881 in Galesburg Illinois. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Haroon Mengershausen, noted in local records.
More than 160 Knights of Columbus from districts across southeastern Iowa attended a business meeting and dinner at the Washington K C hall. De W H Redmond of Cedar Rapids presided, with state secretary Ray Conley and speakers including James H Devaney Len Weeman Rev J H O'Donnell Rev C A Van Waus and John Bolton. Fourteen councils represented including Centerville Albia Chariton Ottumwa Melrose Harper Vietor Marengo Iowa City Burlington Keokuk West Point Ft Madison Washington. The luncheon followed the 2 PM meeting and 4 PM dinner organized by the Washington lodge led by Kelly Grand Knight, marking the largest meeting in the state to date.
Des Moines on October 29 reports all vegetation killed by frost. Charles W Reed of the federal meteorology service says Sunday morning’s heavy frost finished off any remaining plant life, with another cold night possible and temperatures dropping toward 20 degrees in the northeast. The low early today was 26 at Sioux City.
Miss Alice McDaniel and a friend who also teach at Onslow came for the weekend following the 40 homecoming game.
The regional labor board stepped into the dispute between the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company and organized labor in Cleveland to prevent the closing of 425 stores. Over 2,000 employees feared job loss as thousands of dollars of merchandise were moved from local warehouses. Ralph Lind proposed a six point compromise to submit to the National Labor Relations Board awaiting approval by company officials and union leaders.
United Press report lists eight Iowa fatalities across the weekend. Victims include Karl Kraft of Van Horn, Margaret Windolf of Cedar Rapids, Lawrence Kinseth of Humboldt, Harry Enright of an auto crash near Valentine Nebraska, Mrs Freyl Abbas of Belmond, Ernest Schram near Storm Lake, Melvin Roberts of Gilmore City, and Kelly Graham of Red Oak with multiple related crashes and injuries.

In a lobby altercation in New Orleans Burt W. Henry, a prominent attorney, confronted Senator John H. Overton of Louisiana after Overton allegedly made remarks on the Senate floor. A bell boy intervened as Overton sustained a black eye, a bruised cheek, and a cut mouth.
Daryl Fetters was elected president. Max Allen secretary treasurer. George Masson publicity manager. William Cox stage manager. The Washington High School band also announced 1984 roster and noted Daryl and others as top performers in state contests and national drum competitions.

Des Moines October 29 Six high school principals and superintendents were named as candidates for the Iowa high school athletic association board of control ballots go out by state secretary George A Brown with one member chosen from each of the northwest southwest and southeast districts The southeastern Iowa slate includes Supt J H Peet Washington and Principal J T Saur Fairfield High School Peet was put forward by Washington county school superintendents but was not personally an applicant for nomination.

Davison of Washington captured first in the county husking contest held Saturday at Herman Luers farm eight miles northwest of town. He husked 1 018 pounds with 1 861 pounds net after cleaning. Ralph Krantz of Crawfordsville was second and Kermit Jones of Keota third. County Agent W. J. Rouda Bush praised Davison noting his top form and probable success in the state contest.
