About 100 rioting convicts at Menard prison demanded to speak with Gov Adlai Stevenson during a campaign trip. Prison officials warned they would go in shooting if any guards were harmed as hostages were threatened from a 40 foot tower. State police and guards surrounded the east cell block with riot guns drawn as tensions rose.
A farm family southeast of Washington faced costly Halloween pranks draining tractor radiator water and harming a cornfield tractor during cornpicking. Police report a rise in such acts including damaged spark plugs and deflated tires with warnings of prosecution for perpetrators.
President Truman charged Republicans with smear and fear tactics akin to Sen. McCarthy in a St. Paul rally. He warned the GOP has injected slander and character assassination into the national campaign to bolster fear over social issues ahead of the November election.

The 246 acre Perry L. Ayers farm near Wellman sold yesterday at public auction for 291 dollars an acre totaling 69 840. A large crowd attended and bidding was active. Marion Stransky purchased the property with auctioneers Charles Browne and Bill Bruty conducting the sale.
Ed Miick former auditor of the National Bank of Washington starts Monday as cashier of Ainsworth State Bank replacing the late Ray Whitehead. No replacement plan announced for his Washington bank position.
Tom Gray announces that Washington youngsters will parade around the square starting at 5 15 p m Friday ending back at the YMCA for prize awards. Ten other prizes will be given for costumes and a Laurel and Hardy film plus a Halloween feature. The event ends at 7 30 p m with refreshments. Several service clubs sponsor the affair including Y's Men Rotary Kiwanis Junior Chamber YMCA and YWCA.
A Bedford District Court jury of nine men and three women found Elza Jones 75 guilty of manslaughter in the slaying of his son in law from Allen 26. Judge Charles Lewis set November 20 for sentencing and for a motion for a new trial. Jones was remanded to jail after the verdict.
A YWCA public affairs committee plans a get out the vote effort in three Washington grade schools. Parents are urged to cooperate. a prize will go to the room with the highest parent turnout and recognition to the top overall school. Children receive tags reading My Parents Will Vote. parents will return My Parents Voted tags after voting.
The extremely dry autumn fuels fire danger in Washington and across the nation. Four alarms since Monday noon taxed volunteers who contained two near misses. Mayor Dupuis urged citizens to avoid starts when winds blow and to keep water ready. A large grass fire northwest of Washington burned about a square mile interior, not reaching the surrounding road, and was tamed by fire crews and tractors by Monday 8 p.m. The origin remains unclear with Dewey Kaufman unfairly blamed by some sources.
Boy Scouts in Washington organize a county wide get out the vote effort. On the eve of the national election they plan to hang Liberty Bell cutouts on doorknobs across the county assisted by Y's Men Jaycees Kiwanians and Rotarians moving from farm to farm.
Adlai E. Stevenson toured New Jersey and New York hubs as he prepared for a big Democratic event at Madison Square Garden. He spoke to about 125000 Harlem listeners on civil rights and denounced Eisenhower as a political chameleon. He also addressed women Democrats at the Commodore Hotel and disowned Pat McCarran over immigration policy.
Charles Wiele, long time golf pro and greenskeeper at Washington Golf and Country Club, resigns after four seasons to join Mt Pleasant Golf and Country Club. He will move his family November 15, citing better financial opportunities while Mt Pleasant undergoes remodeling and greens upgrades. Wiele contributed significantly to improvements at Washington during his tenure.
Washington firefighters responded to an afternoon alarm at the Iowa Southern Utilities building but found the fire in the rear already extinguished.
Sen Joseph R McCarthy accused Adlai Stevenson of pro left wing ties and Kremlin shaped policies. He cited Stevenson 1943 Italy policy claims and ties to the World Citizens Association plus IPR and Hiss connections. The speech aired nationwide and drew a large partisan audience at the Palmer House.
Barry O'Brien was killed instantly when the pickup he rode in overturned on loose gravel near Idaho Falls. Two other men were unconscious and unable to explain the crash. The victim's brother-in-law, Wayne Norman, and Mrs. O'Brien Faye Wilson of Washington, with funeral services held Saturday in Idaho.
J A Al Hunsaker marked 27 years in Washington since buying the Frank Clarke shoe repair shop and moving from Marengo. His son Bud began helping at age nine and remains at the business. He notes repairmen now offer a wider range of men's and boys footwear to supplement repairs.
President candidate Dwight D. Eisenhower toured Queens and Nassau counties on a morning campaign stop angered by Adlai Stevenson’s charge that his Korea pledge could delay an armistice. He spoke at Borough Hall in Queens and Mineola Nassau and prepared for a 30 minute nationwide telecast.
About one hundred persons attended a Monday night forum in the YMCA Community Room on upcoming election issues. Des Moines attorney Hiram Hunn moderated a WHO round table discussion with five local panelists including Keith Vetter and Dave Elder. The event, sponsored by the YWCA public affairs committee, featured a 2:45 high school assembly talk and a 7:30 p.m. panel meeting followed by open audience discussion.
