Mayor W. B. Dupuis issued an urgent warning to Washington and surrounding areas urging residents to prevent grass fires during the dry period. He noted 11 fires in town since October 11 and 87 in rival areas since October 8, urging careful monitoring and immediate extinguishing of any fires.
Two men were injured Sunday afternoon in a two-vehicle collision about half a mile south of the junction of highways 218 and 92. Karl W. Graber of Wayland suffered a fractured arm. Donald Tisor of Columbus Junction had cuts, bruises, and a possible concussion. Police say reckless driving charges may be filed against Tisor.
Mrs. Florence Johnson a 47 year old Burlington resident and William L. T Butler a 30 year old Tacoma man were treated for injuries after a collision at Temple corner six miles west of Washington on Highway 82 at 12 10 this morning. Butler was released after first aid and Johnson remained under care with shock but not in critical condition.
Washington's Community Chest total rose to 19000 with early afternoon reporting, leaving 4500 to reach the goal. Mrs Don Minick, Chest secretary, said the tally was contributed to her office so far in the 1952 drive.
Mrs Marjorie Boshart and her daughter Lois Ann are new arrivals to Washington from Wayland. They reside at 310 West Adams Street. Mrs Boshart works at Lytle's Grocery and Lois Ann is in her freshman year in high school. They favor the Methodist church.
Washington firefighters responded to a grass fire near Roy Raymond's residence on East Seventh Street. The blaze was soon brought under control after spreading threat but caused concern for nearby properties and prompted precautionary evacuations in the immediate area.
Mrs. Oscar Carlson 85 of South Avenue died at 3 PM Sunday from a heart condition after poor health through the year. Funeral at 2 PM Tuesday October 7 at Jones funeral home with Rev Oscar Moll officiating. Burial Elm Grove cemetery. Hulda Johnson born March 14 1867 in Sweden, married Oscar Carlson Feb 4 1888 in Monmouth IL, lived in county since 1903. Survivors: son Ernest Washington. daughter Mrs Watter Anderson Durant. two grandchildren and four great grandchildren. two sisters Mrs Gus Johnson Kirkwood IL and another sister in Sweden. two brothers in Sweden. Funeral home notes indicate Mr Carlson died in 1908.
In Philadelphia a crowd of about 1200 heard Dwight D. Eisenhower defend his Korea policy. He insisted he would personally go to Korea if elected to push a plan for increasing South Korean troops to allow U.S. forces to shift to reserve positions. He dismissed charges of grandstanding by Democratic leaders and argued Koreans should defend their own territory with greater involvement.
Cars stored in the field and five grass-fire outbreaks stretched local fire crews over the weekend. Firemen were called out of town five times to battle blazes, testing readiness and response.
Samantha St. Neal of Keota dies at 91 in Washington County Hospital. Funeral services were held in Keota with burial in the local cemetery. She was born January 14 1861 near Xenia east of Ainsworth and married Machn Neal December 3 1880. The couple ran a Keota photography studio for 59 years and had two sons Roland a chemistry instructor at Drury College and Neal a Des Moines realtor. She leaves seven grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Mrs Neal was active in Methodist and other local churches.
Clara Scranton born June 28 1973 in Ce dar Township Iowa and died October 21 in Oswego Kansas. She lived in Iowa Oklahoma and Oswego and was active in church work with Baptist faith. She was last of her family, survived by nieces and nephews.
David Kawin Bontrager aged 79 died at his Kalona home Saturday evening after illness. Funeral at East Union Mennonite Church with Rev. A Lloyd Swart vendruber in charge and Son Funeral Home to handle burial in Sharon Tul Cemetery. Survived by Mary M Kempt wife, four sons Kay Leo Hussein Cecil and others, four daughters and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Adlai E. Stevenson warned at Brockton and Quincy Mass that Republican attitudes toward the Korean war risk delaying any armistice. He linked Eisenhower’s peace trip plan to Russian resolve and said America must avoid weakness. He also mocked a Republican pilot’s plane and noted anticipated McCarthy era smears.
Funeral services for Joseph M Soukup were held Sunday afternoon at 1 15 in Jones funeral home and at 2 30 in Riverside Methodist church. Dr C R Reed and Rev L K Jones led the service with Dayvid Cress as soloist. Pallbearers included John Krotz Edwin Kos Louis Horak Joe Knotek William Marek and James Thompson. Burial followed in Riverside cemetery.
Remps Hampsher a well known Washington barber died Sunday morning after a week long illness. Born in 1877 in Alexandria Pa he lived in Washington most of his life. He married Effie Rader on September 10 1907. Funeral services set for Tuesday at Sherman’s funeral home with Dr RR Reed presiding. He was a member of the Methodist church and Knights of Pythias. Survivors include his wife son Allen two grandchildren and brother Don of Gary Indiana.
U S Marines in Korea fight hand to hand with Chinese Reds on the Western Front line near Korangpo. About 3 000 attackers struck a three mile sector, breaching the main line at The Hook before Marines counter attacked, recaptured Warsaw after heavy fighting, and prevented a second penetration despite losses at War saw Ronson and Frisco.
Gladys Knupp Peterson formerly Gladys Knupp from Washington died in La Mesa California Saturday night. She was born October 25 1902 in Washington to Samuel and Maggie Knupp. She married Willis Peterson June 10 1924 and had a son Maurice Glenn who died in infancy. Surviving are her husband three brothers Cloyd Glenn in Washington Wumber in Columbus Ohio and sister Vera Bartholomew of Long Beach California. Funeral plans were indefinite.
Chester McKeown 53 died Saturday evening at Burlington hospital at 5 30. He was a brother of Stanley McKeown of Washington and a World War I Navy veteran. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 o'clock at Mediapolis Methodist Church. He held memberships in the Moose and Masonic lodges.
Washington County 4 H members elect officers at the YMCA jamboree drawing 250 in attendance. Jim Wagenknecht 16 is named president with Bob Cave and David Mineart in officer roles. Paulette Gislain leads as girls president and Ruth Witthoft as vice president. County extension director Robb Speaks Tom Robb urges 4 H to reach the top five percent through leadership.
Nine Washington county young men left by bus this morning for induction into the armed forces. The group includes five from Washington, two from West Chester, one from Brighton, and one now living in Des Moines. Names listed include Keith Parcell, Gilbert Mitchell, Arthur Dunbar, Marion Renoux, Robert Mae George, Robert Libe, Murray Coon, Donald Schantze, and John Mosier.
Governor William S. Beardsley will arrive in Washington Tuesday at 10 o clock and plans to attend Washington's Coffee Club at Wingas Cafe. His secretary notes a visit to Washington and possible attendance at Cotlee Club ceremonies as he seeks membership.

The Hiram Hunn forum in the YMCA community room tonight features five Washington county men on the panel. Dr. C R Reed replaces Rev Milo Phillipi who is out of town due to a relative's death. the YWCA public affairs committee sponsors the event.
Weather summary for Des Moines Iowa indicates mostly fair conditions tonight and Tuesday with a drop in temperature to the low 20s to upper 20s, northwest cooler than southeast. Tuesday highs expected around 42 to 48 with partly warm spell returning Wednesday.
President Truman urged John S. Lewis and Harry M. Moses to end a seven day soft coal strike. Lewis prepared to send back to work telegrams to miners for 4 p.m. shifts. The White House meeting included Roger L. Putnam and others as Truman pressed for an immediate resumption of mining.
A weakening hurricane moved seaward from the Bahamas as searchers sought two missing airmen and two distressed boats. Coast Guard planes and ships resumed a second search for two small planes a motor vessel and a skiff that had radioed for help while the storm weakened and shifted eastward across the Atlantic. The Miami Weather Bureau logged no new Fox observations overnight and placed its location early morning about 275 miles east southeast of Nassau.
