Samuel Kelley 91 a Civil War veteran of Independence died at his home. Survived by two daughters Mrs Ray E Smith of Oelwein and Mrs Al Vin Miller of Independence and a son George A of Bryantsburg.
ALGONA Eugene Walsh pleaded guilty in district court to three charges and received a total thirteen year sentence. He drew ten years for aiding a felon, two years on a narcotics count, and one year for breaking jail.
Sen. Gerald P. Nye of North Dakota will outline measures for U S neutrality in an address at WAVERLY. The speech promises guidance on steps the nation should take to stay neutral in international affairs.
Edgewood residents recall Martin J. Gaughen of 32 arrested in Washington DC on embezzling 39 610.71 from Edgewood Community Savings bank. He served as cashier from September 1935 to January 26 1937 and was a state representative in 1935 from Greeley on the Democratic ticket.
Mason City Nelson 15 of Clear Lake was treated at Park hospital for severe burns after attempting to light a fire with tractor fuel at home. Arms and body, including knees, were badly burned. Doctors call her condition very serious.
About 100 men searched a 25 mile area southwest of New Hampton for escapees Benjamin H Blackeley 25 Warren Ohio and Robert Neservey 19 Minneapolis Minnesota who unlocked their jail cell to flee. The manhunt paused at dusk with state patrols sheriff deputies from several counties and farmer special deputies aiding.
Cedar Rapids District Judge H C Ring sentenced Raymond Dixon to one year in the county jail on a charge of malicious injury to a building. Dixon admitted tossing a brick through the YMCA cafeteria window claiming he wanted jail for the winter, but the judge suspended all but 60 days.
Russell J. Smith filed a claim of 796 against Dubuque for damages to his airplane after it overturned when the propeller tangled in high weeds during landing at the city airport Aug. 27. The airport is run by Dubuque Airways Inc under a city lease that requires weed trimming.
Des Moines reports that new driver license permits may drop stubs as judges detach a permit stub for each traffic conviction. Under the current system a first offense leads to a single stub removal, and a second offense may revoke driving privileges. 1937 to 1939 permits may be the last with stubs, says Horace Tate acting commissioner of motor vehicles.
Ity Eicher of Washington assists Miss Ian the regular teacher at Fairfield High School during practice teaching in Fairfield Iowa. She works with students as part of her training connected to Parsons College.
G. W. Wasson of Muscatine, about 40, jailed in Washington county on forgery counts. Arrested by Sheriff H. M. Putnam, identified for passing a $25 forged check at Orcutt store. Admitted to a second $15 forged check at Answorth store and waived preliminary hearing. Held to district court in 500 dollar bond.
The navy announced plans to construct eleven battleships of 35 000 tons displacement by 1944. President Roosevelt declared America must remain a major sea power and pursue peace while avoiding conquest. The display coincided with Navy Day as part of strengthening national defense.
Mr. Pietz an assistant professor of education at Parsons College expresses satisfaction with Miss Eicher’s English literature work at the high school.
Yesterday evening the fire department answered a call to a small storage building opposite the International Farm Implement store on North Iowa Avenue. The blaze gained little headway and was extinguished quickly, with damage estimated at only a few dollars. The cause remains undetermined. The International company used the building for storage and one tractor tire was damaged.
Mrs Will Kilgore of Ainsworth died yesterday evening at 6 o clock after a short illness believed to be a heart attack. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:30 PM at the United Presbyterian church in Ainsworth with burial in the Ainsworth cemetery. She was born Nannie Wallace on May 17 1869 near Crawfordsville and lived in Ainsworth and Crawfordsville most of her life. Surviving are daughter Louise Boileau son Manford Kilgore sister Mrs W R Smylie and brother William Wallace, all of Ainsworth.
Congressman Edward C. Eicher announced the appointment of Art Wallbank of Mount Pleasant Iowa as his secretary effective November 1 replacing James D France of Tipton who resigned after two years as a member of the Iowa bar.
The Y M C A and its Ys Men group push a fund campaign to make the Y available to every boy. Fourth and fifth graders join the Gra Y and Hi Y programs with Richard Birney as president guiding sixty five high school boys through education, physical, religious and service activities aimed at clean living and scholarship.
Word arrived that Ed Romine of Keota died at his home last night after suffering a paralytic stroke two years earlier. He was past seventy. A sister is Mrs. Charles Beatty of Washington and a brother Newt Romine lives in Sevantus township. The death occurred at two o clock Thursday in Keota. Sam Chase of Des Moines visited town today.
The House Agriculture Committee wrestles with corn surplus control as it meets to draft a permanent farm program. Chairman Rep. Jones outlines options for marketing aids for wheat cotton rice and tobacco while leaving corn to the corn states. The panel aims to have a bill ready by Nov 15 using a prior work bench bill continuing the half billion dollar soil conservation program and granary provisions.
State officers of the United Spanish American War Veterans toured camps in Iowa visiting the Albert M. Huff camp at the Congress hotel. Speakers included Phil S. Billings Des Moines state commander Or McCauley Deputy Adjutant Carl Smith department service officer J F McKeon Marshalltown patriotic instructor and Dr Thomas Curran Iowa secretary of agriculture. McKeegan noted as a state soldiers home official and Hugh McCleery presided with Harry Crone named commander of the Washington organization.
Fire officials respond to a three story binding collapse in the Morris fruit and produce district. Initial dead count announced as five, later reports cited up to eighteen with one body recovered. An explosion followed the collapse as ambulances and fire crews rushed to the scene. four injured were hospitalized and several workers feared buried amid tons of fruit and vegetables.
Norman Baker pays a $50 contempt fine in Iowa for violating a 1932 supreme court injunction. The check is made to Leo Wegman as state treasurer, causing questions on proper disposition. Iowa code and county practices point to Muscatine county, with county treasurer Arthur Nicholson to receive the funds.
Washington ministers arrange the annual Thanksgiving service a union gathering on Thanksgiving Day at United Presbyterian church. Rev. Carl W. Klein of St. Pauls Evangelical church will preach the sermon in Washington with Rev. William M. Nichol directing the event and Miss Carolyn Hamilton leading special music. Local pastors will share in the service and the offering will support a local charity.
Nelson J. Boyer, 21, confessed to murdering his 24 year old wife last August in South Gate California and burying her body in a vacant lot. The confession comes as investigators seek substantiation of the case amid grim details.
Dwight Hoyle led the 1937 Washington county husking contest at Amiel Chabal Place eight miles northeast of town with huskings at about 56 cars per minute. Eleven contestants competed including Elmer Aller and Cecil Davison. Final winner to be determined after full calculations. Matt Euwer won the business men's contest with Ira Shenafelt and Cloid Willits following. About 150 cars were parked, with many visitors from Washington.
Boyer led officers to the burial spot and confessed beating his wife to death during a quarrel with an iron dumb-bell as the weapon.
Shanghai reports a Japanese assault on Chapel fortress as Chinese defenders perished amid flames. Marines observed Chinese surrender attempts ended by machine gun fire. Rear Admiral Yarnell ordered US forces to fire in self defense against air attacks.
A passenger train on the Wabash railroad struck a stalled freight train eight miles southwest of Danville Illinois early today killing three trainmen and injuring about a dozen. The engine crashed through the caboose and several freight cars. creosoted posts in two cars caught fire trapping the engineer and fireman. Coroner Oscar Graham investigated.
Access to Elm Grove cemetery now uses the repaired section of Cemetery Road between South Iowa Avenue and the cemetery entrance. The makeshift repairs improve driving conditions while an engineers’ survey plans a new surfacing next year and route changes. Blaine Holmes oversees the work with a crew this week painting downtown parking lanes.
