Centerville report says M. 8S. Wilson, 65, a lone farmer five miles west of Moravia, became the neighborhood hard luck champion after stepping on an ear of corn. He fell as the ear rolled, resulting in a fractured right thumb and fractured left wrist.
Emil Ludwig, famed biographer, told 800 attendees at Simpson college forum that dictators make noise not history. He argued the absence of a strong successor after a dictator’s departure leaves the regime weak and short lived.
Oskaloosa farmer and rural mail carrier Othmer Moser 48 started a six month sentence in Black Hawk county jail after pleading guilty in federal court to defrauding patrons on his rural route. He allegedly accepted 22 for postal savings deposits and did not make the deposits.
Sixty four local oil station operators petitioned the Ottumwa city council urging no new permits for stations. Council hears there are ninety six filling stations already within the city limits.
Washington county hospital gains approval from the American College of Surgeons and joins Iowa’s list of 61 standardized hospitals. The Washington facility, small at 35 beds, follows Decorah with 30 beds and Cedar Falls with 41. The hospital has long held approval and joins criteria emphasizing a modern plant, defined governance, competent staff, adequate facilities, thorough medical records, regular reviews, and a humane patient focus.
Former President Herbert Hoover is set to speak tonight at a Republican club in Boston. The eight o’clock address will be broadcast nationwide via radio, following Alf Landon’s sharp critique of the New Deal. Rumors say both Landon and Hoover may withdraw from the 1940 nomination picture.

Tomorrow’s husking contest at the Amiel Chabal farm eight miles northeast of Washington will feature ten entrants. Among them are former champions Elmer Aller and Dwight Hoyle, with new participants Clarence Aller of Seventy six township and Alvin Hahn of Crawfordsville. Cloud Willits represents Washington in the 9:30 business men division for those who haven’t husked corn in a decade.
Seventy corn sealers in 15 Iowa counties were appointed to day by Dr. Thomas Curran to serve under the state warehouse law on corn loans. The sealers were named by county warehouse boards. Curran will name others from the remaining 84 counties soon. The sealing fee will be paid by grain owners and ranges from half a cent to one cent per bushel.
Sheriff Harold M. Putnam met with Rock Island authorities and questioned three Albia men tied to multiple safe blows and burglaries across Iowa. He suspects they aided the Sands store robbing at Ainsworth last July and recent county schoolhouse burglaries. Federal officers arrested the trio after seizing a stolen car in Silvis and transporting it to Texas.
The Washington city council recently passed a milk ordinance now published in full in the Journal. The measure targets the milk industry and aims to ensure a pure milk supply for the community with enforcement by the county health unit.
John Stout of Keota was taken to Washington county hospital after his coat tangled in a corn picker. He was pulled into the machine, suffering several broken ribs and a hip injury, with cuts to his head and arm and other minor wounds. He has begun set up exercises with coach and sponsor C F E Schmitt of the Chamber of Commerce assisting his recovery.
The Rev. William McCreery Matthews, 80, died yesterday evening at his sister’s home in Iowa, after years of limited mobility. Born 1857 in Indiana County, Pa, he served United Presbyterian churches and studied at Monmouth and Nenia Theological Seminary. Funeral set for Wednesday at United Presbyterian Church with burial in Ainsworth cemetery.
Vienna physician Dr M Juvenal announces a diet plan to cure red noses. The regimen starts with vegetables fruits and low fats and albumin for two months, then adds milk curds for two months, followed by the same diet plus 11 ounces of meat and two eggs weekly.
The deceased belonged to the Keokuk presbytery of the United Presbyterian Church and attended presbyterial meetings. Survived by brother J. O. Matthews and sister Mrs Jennie Acheson, both residents of Washington. Two brothers preceded him in death, including John T. Matthews a former clerk of court and county auditor, and Dr. Samuel Matthews, longtime University of Chicago faculty member.
Shanghai battlefront sees Japanese forces occupy Ta chang and Kinchang and cut the Shanghai Nanking railway. Chinese counter attacks are described as desperate while observers warn the Japanese war machine dominates a 25 mile front. Japanese reports claim Chinese losses reached a quarter million through Oct 23 with 67,090 dead. The Shanghai Hankow rail link remains as the only free line.
In letters to friends and contributors the Y M C A in Washington urges support as the annual campaign begins next Tuesday November 2. The note explains fees are kept low to allow many youths to benefit and asks for gifts beyond regular memberships to sustain essential activities and programs.
