WEST CHESTER UNICEF campaign invites children from kindergarten to junior high to meet at United Methodist Church on Sunday evening October 31. The drive runs from 6 to 8 p.m. Participants will join the community effort to raise funds and awareness for UNICEF programs.
Karl Jones and Tom Sheetz of the Washington County Ambulance Service completed a CPR instructor course in Des Moines. The American Heart Association will sponsor the program and urge more people to take the class so first aid can be provided at heart attack scenes until advanced help arrives.
Heavy snows moved from western mountains into the Plains as rain drenched the east. Snow warnings and watches covered a large western area, with the Colorado mountains forecast to see at least six inches. Travel advisories were posted for Idaho, Colorado, Utah and Wyoming, and stockmen warnings for Wyoming and Kansas.
Older 4-H members in Washington County will report the general election results to the News Election Service on Tuesday November 2. One 4-H’er per precinct will go to the polls 15 minutes before closing to obtain results and call them in. The Teamsters Central States pension fund fires eleven trustees amid a government led probe into mismanagement of a 1.4 billion fund. The restructuring cuts the board from 16 to 10 and aligns appointments evenly between unions and employers. Affected include Frank Fitzsimmons, with several others resigning or remaining under new terms. Investigators cite possible violations of federal pension law and refer some evidence to the Justice Department. The shift follows Labor Department pressure and an October 11 meeting in California led by executive director Daniel J. Shannon. Workforce contributions run from nine to twenty five dollars weekly per employee, funding real estate and securities investments and monthly payouts totaling millions.
United Nations politics aside Carter says the world tires of bluffs and blustering. He would not commit U S troops if Russia attacked Yugoslavia, a stance Ford denounces as inviting aggression. Ford campaigns in Pittsburgh and Illinois while criticizing Carter’s remarks as inexperience and dangerous to peace.
New York UPI report quotes Dr. Harold Howe II as saying a 10 percent dip in college entrance test scores is a light flu compared with broader social declines. He warns tests miss many traits and cautions against regimentation in schools while noting factors like birth control pills, TV, diet, and Latin enrollment may influence scores.
Incumbent Ralph Marshall and Robert Pearson, both Republicans, along with Democrat Carol Pilcher, seek the two four year terms on the Washington County Board of Supervisors in the November 2 election. Patterson retires, Marshall and Pearson emphasize tax relief, local control, and service quality while Pilcher pledges accountability and responsive governance. Mostly cloudy tonight with a Wednesday in the 40s.
