Des Moines reports the Iowa district set November passenger car tire quotas at 46 000, similar to October. Only essential drivers may use passenger car tires. Small truck tires drop to 6 368 from 9 000 in October while large truck tires stay at 4 157 versus 4 600 in October.
Brig. Gen Hanford MacNider and his son Jack have returned to Mason City from Pacific duties. They arrived in San Francisco last Sunday and are visiting another son, Angus, at a Tucson school. Mrs. MacNider joined them in Tucson.
Lis Carrizales of 819 Fifteenth Street Des Moines became a father at age eighty six when his 21 year old wife Mary gave birth to a baby girl weighing 6 pounds 12 ounces at Mercy Hospital. Carrizales a Wood Brothers Thresher Co. employee is native of Sapulpa Oklahoma and has seven other children from a prior marriage. He credits his strength to calisthenics and wood chopping.
The sixty eighth annual session of the Order of the Eastern Star ends with Mrs. Gladys Haycock of Des Moines elected worthy grand matron and W Russell Hayes of Prairie City chosen worthy grand patron. Other officers include Mrs. Mildred Harrington Sioux City associate matron Clifford Young Conway associate patron and a full slate of local appointees across Cedar Rapids Humboldt and Des Moines.
Roy Tinn, a Lincoln, Nebraska truck driver, was found guilty on two counts of highway traffic violations related to a September 9 collision on Highway 6 east of Newton that left 89 year old Mrs. avid W. Allen dead and another injured. He posted $500 bond.
Cedar Falls Iowa State Teachers College sees 75 to 100 women students in a strike against a four year old no smoking policy. About 20 protesters called on President St Malcolm Price to protest the rule.
County school districts push national war fund with $400 added to reach $10,606.80 of a $12,200 allotment. Glenn Rabr and Andy Augustine reported strong gifts from Cedar and West Chester areas. Franklin township totals $452 beating its quota. More districts expected to contribute before week end.
Dr Charles K Brown former Yale Divinity School dean emeritus and Iowa State alumnus will give a graduate lecture at Old Capitol in Iowa City on Tuesday October 30 at 8 pm. The talk titled Facing Present Difficulties invites the general public.
Funeral services for Joseph H. Shalla were held yesterday afternoon at Sherman s funeral home conducted by Dr Fred K E Miller of the Methodist Church. A vocal solo was performed by Mrs Mily Sorden with Edna Klein on piano. Pallbearers included Clarence Timmins H L Huber Henry Witthoft John Witthoft Charles Casper and John Knotek Burial took place in Elm Grove Cemetery.

CIO auto workers in 45 General Motors plants are ready to strike at any time and Chrysler employees joined GM workers in authorizing a walkout for wage gains. Vice President Walter Reuther said more strike plans are in operation as 45 GM locals had considered secret ballots and 90 percent favored the strike action.

Hundreds of truckloads of soybeans from Washington and neighboring counties arrive daily at the Washington Honeymead Soybean Products plant. Truck lines form before 7 a.m. as beans are unloaded into large bins, with the 1945 crop filling storage of about 220000 bushels. Plant manager S H Burchfield notes improving quality and a strong local market, with plans for expansion and new brewer’s flakes output for malt beverage use.
Tokyo reports a Japanese designer claims the Ki-77 long range plane set a 10,306 mile non stop distance last July. He also says only two were made, one downed en route to Germany in 1944 and another to be studied in the United States. American raids in Japan seized 5.5 million dollars in bullion and radium from the German consulate in Osaka. MacArthur’s HQ says no official word on the Ziabtsu affair, an industrialist family tied to Japan’s war effort.

President Truman will address Central Park in New York tomorrow at 12 30 p m on foreign policy in what aides call his most important speech since taking office. He will also speak for nine minutes at the commissioning of the carrier Franklin D Roosevelt at Brooklyn Navy Yard, a nonbroadcast event. He departs Washington tonight with a large official party.
