Former resident Mrs Benson dies at 58 in New Jersey
Barbara Miller Benson, formerly of Washington Iowa, died in her sleep October 24 at her Princeton New Jersey home. She was survived by sister Ophelia Gallup of Princeton and three children, Bossey Crowther of New York City, Edward Lt. Jr. US Navy, and Mary Ophelia of Oxford England. Services set for Wednesday at 11:00 in Princeton burial. Barbara Miller, born October 29 1907 in Washington Iowa, was daughter of Alex Miller and founder of Iowa Highway Patrol wife. Her career spanned editor roles at Mason City Globe Gazette Ladies Home Journal and later associate director at Princeton Audience Research Institute.

Army Staff Sergeant Larry C. Curtis, 26, son of Mr and Mrs Charles Curtis of rural Crawfordsville, participated in a civic action project in Pleiku Vietnam. As an administrative specialist with II Corps Psychological Warfare Civil Affairs Office he distributed clothes from VFEFW Post 788 Cedar Rapids to refugees at Plei Trung village. Curtis observed children accepted sweaters shirts and blouses but were hesitant to try skirts or pants.

Gully Control Dam Improves Farm Pond Near Ainsworth
In Washington County a major summer project on Willard McCracken’s 407 acre farm north of Ainsworth created a large gully control dam and 155 acre watershed pond. The 1500 foot gully is being shaped into a permanent sod waterway with tile extended to the pond. The multi purpose pond will control erosion reduce flood runoff and provide water for livestock and recreation. About half the cost was paid by the federal ACP program with Soil Conservation Service technicians guiding the project. The dam was completed just days before heavy summer rains caused the pond to fill rapidly.
