Des Moines OPA reports critical tire shortage leaving many big trucks out of service. One major carrier is 706 tires short in spares while another was allotted far fewer than needed. Officials say operators are not running full equipment as tires remain unavailable, hampering transportation.
Monday night burglars forced entry into the Blencoe Farmers Elevator main office and broke the gate with crowbars. John Hendricks the manager reported to Onawa Police Officer Frank Seigler that the thieves took $168 from company funds and nearly $1,000 of his personal money along with tools from a smaller office.
Nels A. Christensen a 66 year old former Alta postmaster pleaded guilty after opening statements in Sioux City federal court. He admitted falsifying records to obtain 1000 dollars in postal savings belonging to Tillie Anderson of Alta who later died and received a six month prison sentence from Judge Henry N. Graven.
OTTUMWA Second Lieutenant Henry Lyman, 33, one of seven Lyman brothers in the armed forces, has been missing in action in Germany since Oct. 3, per parents Mr and Mrs T K Lyman. The notice comes a year after Harry Lyman, seaman first class in the coast guard, was electrocuted on duty in Brooklyn. Lieutenant Lyman went to England with his reconnaissance outfit last January.
Louis Lange Jr. 17 Monticello faces man slaughter charge in the Hopkinton bicycle crash that killed Kenneth Smith 12 on Highway 48. Lange surrendered after the charge was filed, waived preliminary hearing, and was bound over to the Jones County Grand Jury set for November 27 with a 3500 dollar bond.
Mayor W S Reiley announces the 8 8 Red Oak Victory will be christened October 31 in Richmond California. The mayor's wife will perform the christening. Dr Reiley could not attend due to doctor shortages. Red Oak citizens donated 182 books for the ship's library and the Red Oak Elks Lodge presented a commemorative plaque.
Soviet forces pushed into East Prussia routing four Nazi panzer divisions and advanced near Koenigsberg while simultaneously moving along the Kaunas to Koenigsberg railway line. In the Arctic, Kirkenes fell as Soviet units crossed the Finnish border and pressed toward Norway’s northern coast. The North front also reported heavy battles around Memel and Masurian Lake region as Berlin faced multiple blows.
Mrs. James K. Zeck 85 of 417 East Main street died this morning at Washington county hospital after years of hip fracture recovery. Funeral arrangements are with LA Jones Funeral Home. service led by Dr. Fred B. Miller at Elm Grove Cemetery. Surviving husband James K. Zeck, son Ralph Zeck, six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Zeck was a longtime Washington county resident and church member active in the Ladies Aid and Missionary society.
Cora Mae Sabin sues Melvin Sabin for divorce custody of their minor child two years old temporary alimony and support. She states they married in Washington County on December 24 1941 and seeks an injunction to bar contact or molestation.
Allied forces report the seizure of a key Dutch transport hub near S Hertogenbosch with 60 000 German troops encircled near the Maas river. British second army advances reach Tilburg and Boxmeer while Canadian forces near Bergen op Zoom link to the Schelde estuary, trapping German forces and widening the advance amid winter conditions.
Don L. Carbaugh of Ottumwa a former Washington resident died at his home yesterday afternoon after an illness of heart trouble. He was a C M and St P railroad signalman and longtime local Mason active in lodge work. Surviving are his wife and several children from a former marriage. Funeral arrangements are not yet known.
Corporal Wayne Simmerman, a 23 month Marine veteran, described the challenges of the Tarawa Saipan and Tinian landings to the Y's Men's club last night and fielded questions for several minutes after.
A theft report from Toledo involves a suspect who removed a tire from Nicholas Wichowski’s vehicle and swapped it with a worn replacement. Police seek the suspect and review nearby surveillance for leads.
The Washington county Republican central committee announced a meeting to be held Thursday evening at Crawfordsville Consolidated School beginning at eight o'clock. Attorney General John Rankin will speak, arranged by J C Huston and Mrs Howard Anderson, Crawford township representatives on the county committee.
Staff Sergeant Harold Dawson, son of Mr and Mrs Clyde Dawson, living seven and a half miles southwest of town, is listed missing in action. He served as a gunner on a B 24 Liberator and is believed to have been lost in the Asiatic theater on Oct 9 after flying from a base in China. The last letter from him was dated Oct 7 and arrived after the telegram. He had served over two years in the Army Air Corps and overseas since June of this year.
A Washington county civics class under Edith Shields will plan the get-out-the-vote effort. Supt M M Sehell and the teachers will organize a house to house canvass before Nov 7 urging eligible voters to participate, with county superintendents leading local efforts in each town.
The Washington county national war fund drive has raised 16174 37 with 807 25 added yesterday in Kalona and more from Washington volunteers. County totals may exceed 18000 with Washington city aiming for 6000. Donations flow through courthouse headquarters as canvassing continues though farming schedules delay some rural areas. Sheriff H M Putnam reports progress across Lime Creek Iowa and other townships with districts contributing from 500 to 6000 dollars and townships completing or nearing completion. Iowa leads the nation in this drive as state chairman praises county reports and urges continued support from all voters.
General action continues as the American third fleet reports sinking at least one Japanese aircraft carrier and damaging multiple ships in the Leyte area. Princeton was sunk with heavy Allied losses, while Japanese claims vary on the toll. Admiral Nimitz notes 150 Japanese planes shot down amid the fiercest air sea clash to date. General MacArthur reports counterattacks on Japanese ground forces in Leyte.
Sheriff reports Rev R W Pinnell's Plymouth sedan stolen two weeks ago in Wellman was found at Bettendorf. Vehicle in poor shape, out of gasoline and battery dead. Minister's car taken while he conducted Methodist services. Also, Wayne Hoehle and Tom McKenzie injured in a Kalona crash. Hoehle has a broken arm and possible jaw fracture. McKenzie suffered head cuts and bruises.
