Conflicting reports from Europe claim a possible French axis war deal with Germany and Italy to confront the British fleet. Adolf Hitler and Pierre Laval reportedly confer as Laval may assume government powers. a Brenner Pass meeting of Hitler and Mussolini is shown in a Clipper ship image.
A Hamilton county coroner and jury ruled that Henry Groshens and wife Josephine, both 62, died from gunshot wounds inflicted by an unknown assailant. The Groshens were found dead at their seven mile northeast farm home, believed slain Monday evening. No arrests yet as officers seek a man who threatened to kill the Groshens and two of his brothers.
Thousands of spectators lined a mile long parade in Centerville for the first annual Ole King Coal carnival. Free coffee and doughnuts, a pageant and a dance followed the parade. A 5000 miner and family petition urged exclusive use of Iowa coal in state tax supported institutions.
Des Moines reports Lt Col Ralph Lancaster says 11 Iowa draft boards will use horse sense to decide which young men before them enter a year of military training. He notes boards follow a 46 page instruction book, but aim to minimize disruption to civilian life after the national lottery.
A district court jury found for L. T. Baker Newton trucker in a suit by Marjorie Hanson of Mason City seeking 1914 for injuries and car damage from a May accident near Marshalltown. The case was the first of two suits resulting from the crash that killed David Miller 21, son of Mrs. L H Miller of Chicago.
VICHY Oct 26 UP Marshal Premier Petain and Premier Laval told Adolf Hitler that France cannot endure current armistice terms with ten million unemployed and shortages of coal oil and food threatening mass starvation this winter. Axis raids over London involved over 200 planes with many shot down.
French authorities refused entry to the American chartered freighter Siklang in Haiphong harbor. Japanese officers boarded the ship after it departed and seized cargo valued around 10000, believed intended for Chiang Kai-shek's Chungking government.
Sioux City's new half million dollar municipal airport will be dedicated Sunday eight miles south of here at the northwest limits of Sergeant Bluff. The main highway link is No 75. A pre dedication banquet in the Warrior hotel is set for 6 30 p m Saturday with Eddie Rickenbacker the World War I ace as principal speaker. Sioux City's former airport nearby was named in his honor.
A Washington delegation joined a Burlington district conference of ministers laymen and women’s groups in Mt Pleasant. Secretary Leigh Soule of the Washington Y M C A chaired the laymen’s meeting on church finances and men’s clubs. Earle Libe spoke on the men’s club movement. Bishop J Ralph Magee gave two addresses. Attendees included Dr R C Keagy Rev KE Hebner and Leo Hoover.
Willkie motion pictures will be shown again Saturday evening at 7 30 and 8 39 in the vacant store room south of the Barclay grocery where the Ramseyer hatchery stood. A new reel with questions and answers by the Republican presidential candidate will be shown alongside the three reels already shown. Crowds attended last Saturday night and larger turnout is expected tomorrow night.
Susan Rachel Hewitt, 83, died this morning at her son in law and daughter's home three miles north of Ainsworth where she lived for five months. The body was taken to Sherman’s funeral home and later to her former home at Bible Grove Missouri for burial.
Clara Dawson files for divorce from Merle Dawson stating marriage in 1931 and separation in 1937. She seeks custody of two minor children.
Wendell Willkie called for the President to state his views on fourth and fifth terms. He announced plans to debate Roosevelt by radio 24 to 48 hours after each of Roosevelt's four speeches. Willkie's swing through New York and Pennsylvania aims at the two states with 83 of 266 electoral votes.
President Roosevelt told reporters in Washington that if he wins a third term he would serve the full four years. He denied rumors he might yield the presidency to Vice President Henry A. Wallace, saying he would remain in office.
Phyllis Ahrens of Washington who studied at Davenport business college for a year has accepted a position with the McCarthy insurance agency in Davenport.
Edward C. C. Eicher former congressman and SEC member spoke to a full courthouse crowd in Washington Iowa last night. He criticized Willkie as unfit for office and blamed Wall Street for supporting his campaign while praising the New Deal and Roosevelt.
Charlie Mayer accompanied a shipment of cattle to Chicago on Sunday. Local residents, events, and visits surrounding the Mayer and Mangold families are noted, including community meeting at Center school and various social calls.
Charles City reports the death of 8 year old Phylitts Dobbs after an upstairs fall onto a sidewalk injuries sustained Wednesday by the daughter of Mr and Mrs Ralph Dobbs.
Howard B. Gardner, 73, died suddenly at his farm home near Wellman after feeling ill last night. He was born in 1867 and lived his life in the Lexington and Wellman area. He is survived by his wife Mary Jane Wilson Gardner and their son Hoyt. Funeral services will be held at his home with burial in Elm Grove cemetery.
President Roosevelt issued regulations under the selective service law ensuring that all men called into service will receive at least five days' notice to settle personal and business affairs before reporting. As draft procedures are finalized, a group of girls works at conscription headquarters filing capsules with numbers for the drawing. The order numbers will determine the sequence for 17 million registered men to appear before local draft boards.
Phyllis died Thursday afternoon from a basal skull fracture at Cedar Valley hospital after a window screen gave way and she fell. Authorities are investigating the accident.

Marion Link a 25 year old Story county farmer won the Jolby a corn husking championship with a net load of 3051 inds or 43.58 bushels. He beat the previous record by five and a half bushels held by Carl Carlson of Audubon Ivy Carlson of Boone county was second with 2814 pounds or 40.2 bushels.
Sheriff H. M. Putnam investigated a car found on Brighton Street. The vehicle belonged to Frank L. McLain of Fairfield and had been stolen the previous day. It had been left there behind a vacant cornfield to conceal its presence from observers.
Fiorello H. LaGuardia grabbed and shook a man named Ben Owen from a crowd at Detroit city hall after a heckle. The mayor shouted to retract the remark, and police released the heckler who then accused the mayor of being sent by Boss Flynn, Edward P. Flynn, head of the Democratic National Committee.
