Ex Governor W N Harding of Des Moines who suffered a heart attack while campaigning in Ohio is reported to be recovering steadily at his Des Moines home. He had been in ill health for months but remained active during the campaign.
Reginald Tracy of Manchester was condemned to death for murdering his wife Mable Tracy on October 3. Accomplice Flossie Frear received life imprisonment at Rockwell City reformatory. The state alleges Tracy and Frear conspired for years with two prior abortive plots to remove Mrs. Tracy in a staged hold up.
Cedar Rapids artist Grant Wood gains fame for typical midwest scenes. He sold The Thresher's Dinner for 8000 to the Carnegie Institute of Pittsburgh. Also noted are Farmer and Wife and The D A R s composites from recent months.
The Iowa Old Age Assistance commission received odd pension requests. A Bremer County man wrote of needing 100 dollars a month but could live on 25, and another applicant asked for 800 dollars in advance to start a business and drop from the pension list. The tone suggests some seekers misinterpret the program as easy money.
Secretary of State Mrs. Alex Miller spoke in Humboldt on Wednesday night calling for highway safety patrol work and safety education to raise Iowa highways to the nation’s safest tier.

S N Williams 83 longtime Cornell College professor Mt Vernon Ia founder of civil engineering dept died Wednesday in a Cedar Rapids hospital. He taught at Cornell until 1913 and led the Iowa Engineering Society for two years. He also contributed to the American Railway Engineering Society.
Charles Biklen has just returned from a business trip to Chicago. He went in Sunday.
The American Bankers Association committee urged convention backing for President Roosevelt’s recovery plan and asked for an early budget balance. The group was expected to approve the recommendation, placing bankers on record in support of the recovery effort.
Oska loosa speaker Mr Turner accuses Mr Herring of pushing a Tammany style spoils system into Iowa schools. He cites the Trookings report advocating centralization and the abolition of the elected superintendent post, backing state control over local districts.

The bullet shaped M-10001 fastest train crosses the United States to Grand Central in two days hours 55 minutes from Los Angeles. About 1 000 greet the train engineer H D Robinson fainted on arrival. It halves the former 71 27 record set after the 1966 earthquake. The Chicago to New York leg took 18 hours and 39 minutes behind schedule. It is a Union Pacific train crossing Iowa on Northwestern tracks.
Dr. John F. Condon says he is convinced that Prono Hauptmann is the mysterious "John" who received the $50,000 ransom. The conclusion followed a surprise visit to Hauptmann in his cell, where Condon spoke for over an hour using phrases from the Lindbergh kidnapping case. He left certain the two were the same person.
Junior and senior English students at Washington high school take part in a state wide health essay contest sponsored by the Iowa tuberculosis association. Essays up to 600 words discuss tuberculosis and control efforts with nine finalists broadcasting on WHO Des Moines. First prize scholarships total 115 dollars at Drake University along with local cash awards of 3 2 and 3 dollars for Washington finalists.
L. E. Wilson manager of the Eclipse lumber yard was elected president of the University of Iowa alumni in Washington County at the annual meeting. Irwin Brighton dentist was named vice president and Henry Batley Washington attorney became secretary and treasurer. Sixty nine members attended, with a dinner at Congress hotel and addresses by university and local leaders.
The Ames versus Oskaloosa high school football game in the Central Iowa conference may be ruled a no contest after halftime when lights failed at Oskaloosa last Friday. Iowa association secretary George A. Brown said no protest exists and a decision will await the conference season finish.
In Sonora California locals marvel at English flyers who used a twin engine plane though only one motor ran. Wiley Pos would have shined if he persisted. Dutch pilots in a Douglas were praised for their effort as Englishmen won with Turner and Pangborg noted for strong performances. Jit ban predicted Japan air ventures into California for lunch.
Lafayette Shreve aged 67 died at 1645 this morning at 717 East Polk street after a long illness. He lived in the Washington community for twenty years and will be buried Friday at two oclock at J A Jones funeral home with Dr F L Witzieman presiding. Survived by wife Rogetta Walker Shreve a brother C J Shreve of Pender Nebraska.
Harold Clegg of Ainsworth refutes rumors that the bandit Floyd Mayweather alias Pretty Boy Floyd stayed in the county. Clegg recalls a McIntyre Bostetter family in Iowa and a neighbor Jack Hamilton, a devout worker, arguing Floyd did not live near Ainsworth or in Washington County.
In Manchester Iowa Mrs Flossie Pear aged 92 was moved to Rockwell City to begin a life term. Reginald Tracy a 53 year old insurance agent joined death row at the state penitentiary. They were sentenced by Judge A Lovejoy for a confessed plot to kill Tracy’s wife during a staged holdup.
William Griffin of Riverside chairs the county farm debt conciliation board. The board will meet at the county courthouse at 2 oclock p.m. on November 7 21 December 19 January 2 16 and 30 for hearing grievances about farm debts.
The American Legion at its 16th annual convention in Miami voted 987 to 182 to urge Congress to pay soldiers’ bonuses immediately. The action, amid a tumultuous scene, also sought refund of accrued interest on adjusted compensation certificates not due until 1945 and aligned with government stimulus aims.
Washington Drum Corps will join drum and bugle groups from more than ten towns to compete for a University of Iowa prize on Armistice Day weekend. The event, part of American Legion day activities, includes a Purdue Town football game and a stadium showdown between 1 and 2 pm. Cities expected include Burlington Davenport Sioux City Independence Elkader Cedar Rapids Muscatine Waterloo and Washington.
Four wagons are still needed for Saturday's county corn husking contest. County Agent W. J. Khondabush asks for volunteers to lend wagons, with contact to Charles Fuhr or the agent. The event starts at 10 a.m. at the Val Fuhr home on the Herman Luers farm, eight miles northwest of Washington. Wagons should be on site by 9:30 to be geared, and the contest will run about one hour and twenty minutes, with final results late afternoon amid a expected crowd.
