Richard Herbert Gephart, 2, son of Mrs. Roland Drafah, died in Linn County after falling stairs at the Drafahl residence. Dr. T Frank Herseh, county coroner, ruled skull fracture and cerebral hemorrhage as the cause. The child was from Mrs. Drafahl’s former marriage.
Mrs. Ruth Madsen of West Branch had a murder charge dismissed by Judge G. K. Thompson in Cedar County District Court. The stay order to return her to the Cherokee state hospital for the insane was denied by the supreme court. She had awaited trial for the three year old slaying of her husband Henry Madsen and was released from the Cherokee hospital after being pronounced sane.
Ottumwa district court dismissed a jury after nearly 23 hours of deliberation on charges of driving while intoxicated involving Lt Lawrence Gibson of the oval air station. Six days were needed to finish the trial with Highway Patrolman Kenneth Richardson as chief witness.
A 1550 pound Hereford escapee from the Milwaukee stock yards wandered through Maquoketa streets on Tuesday. It charged into a high school yard where teachers herded students inside. Bow Dorsey of a local cattle firm shot and killed the animal in a nearby field. Owner is John Rockrohr, a farmer near town.
DES MOINES Iowa health officials report 247 poliomyelitis cases this year through last Saturday far exceeding the expected 77. The year end projection remains at or near 77 while last year had 166 cases by this time.
The Altatailt & Langlas Baking Co. answered a $20,000 libel suit filed by O. S. Von Krog in district court. Von Krog seeks damages from the bakery radio station KXEL and H. R. Gross. The bakery says it is not responsible for remarks on the broadcast and notes it only funds advertising time. The suit stems from Gross' coverage of charges against Von Krog following an investigation of the state boys training school at Eldora.
Iowa war finance committees plan the Victory Loan campaign with 40 000 volunteers to solicit bonds house to house. Iowa targets 46 million dollars in Series FE bonds and 135 million dollars across all securities with a new 200 Roosevelt Series E bond. Leaders say the drive will finish wartime financing and curb inflation while aiding wounded veterans and postwar recovery.
The Washington County recorder reports 40 more military discharges in ten days, totaling 893. Entries list names, ranks, home addresses, service length, campaigns, and medals for soldiers from the army navy and marine corps, including Daryl Dodder and Richard Dewis with noted theaters and ribbons.
Police arrested 175 picketers at Paramount and RKO studios while 325,000 CIO auto workers voted on a General Motors strike. Seizing control of the scene, officers moved sitters to wagons and bused nonstrikers onto the lots. Elsewhere a 7,500-worker Westinghouse strike and a Union Switch and Signal slowdown mark broader unrest.
Fred Downing was installed as commander of the Washington county American Legion organization with Preston Woll as county adjutant. Paul Fulton of Burlington, district commander, installed Beas Kehoe and Jess Lewis of Welman as county officers in a well attended meeting with over 100 men from multiple towns.
A meeting in the Washington County community room formed a temporary Isaac Walton League chapter to back an artificial Lake project. Speakers F B Miller and L W Richards urged lake plans, with 160 signups and a next meeting set for Nov 6 at the Y.
Dr. Russel D. Bussdicker, a medical missionary with over twenty years in Iran, will speak at the Washington Presbyterian Church Friday evening at 7 o clock. He will discuss Iran, its needs and opportunities, with his work centered at Westminster Hospital in Kermanshah.
Louis H. Winchell inspector general of the National Border Veterans association and staff travel to Washington to inaugurate K Company patrol No. 18 at city hall. About 15 members start, with more expected. open to men who served on the Mexican border in 1916 and 1917.

Tokyo dispatch reports Col Ken Rh Dyke, head of MacArthur’s civil information, ordering major Japanese newspapers to publish truthfully, explain Allied aims, promote free discussion, and give public opinion equal access. The move follows a newsroom labor dispute and presses for independent editorials.
In Washington Republicans press for more tax relief as the Senate starts debate on a 5.625 billion dollar 1946 tax reduction measure. Senator Arthur H. Vandenberg proposes exempting 1945 corporate earnings up to 25 000 from the excess profits tax to spur reconversion and job creation.
Washington county’s war fund drive total reaches 10078.95 with 262 added yesterday. Additional gifts are expected this week as Wellman township and Lime Creek districts begin contributing. Center district report shows 72 toward a 55 quota. West Chester district reports 62 toward 60. ten solicitors remain to report today. Total Washington contributions reach 3564.65.
