In Waterloo on Oct 24 a Clipper bound for Illinois Central derailed one mile south of Charles City after two rails were removed. Several coaches toppled from a high embankment. forty people escaped injury while engineer Chevallier suffered minor injuries. Wrecking suspected but no clues found.
Chicago police report Majorie Vinton named as alleged accomplice of Alba Went in a scheme tied to May 1880s fraud at Union Trust of Jamestown New York. Vinton, alias Celia Manning, was arrested in Yokohama and on a Japan bound liner after Kent’s disappearance. Kent, linked to the case, was tracked by Detectives Early and Thompson. Vinton formerly lived in Grand Rapids Michigan and is noted for beauty and musical talent.
Racine and Milwaukee police search for Geo Brown who posed as a Brown Foreman distiller representative. He secured a forged draft and a large hotel bill before fleeing to Milwaukee. the Louisville company denies any such agent. Other items note Joliet Railway lease to American Railway, a train link Joliet to Chicago, and a strained legal case in Brazil.
Des Moines residents celebrated the safe arrival of the Fifty-first Iowa regiment from Manila to San Francisco. The curfew whistle rang, bells tolled, and extra newspapers issued as the unit’s journey from Des Moines began June 5 1890s and ended Oct 22 in San Francisco. In Council Bluffs the news came at 4 PM from San Francisco via the Senator transport prompting crowds at newspaper offices.
In Anderson Indiana on October 24 Governor Mount orders State Factory Inspector McAbee to file injunctions against Nevins Glass to prevent hiring girls to replace striking boys over wage demands. Cape Town reports Boer losses including General Viljoen killed General Kock's son dead and Commander Pretorius wounded and captured Generals Viljoen and Kock are cited as targets of Dutch sympathy while outsiders praise British victories and perceived British magnanimity toward Boers.
Major General Nelson A Miles arrived in Chicago last Sunday night and left yesterday morning in a special car for Port Sheridan He will remain several days in Omaha afterward Joining him are Mrs Miles Miss Celia Miles Miss Annie Hoyt of New York Frank Hall of Philadelphia and Colonel Francis Michlar senior aide to Miles Also reported are a Columbus editor attacked by Louis Schneidermann, a missing man found deceased near Carney, a girls escape from Mitchellville Industrial School, a teen suicide near Clay City and the death of Milwaukee editor Onto Kiesis.
In LaSalle on Oct 24 Patrick Gavin drank carbolic acid after his daughter Agnes Gavin wed bicycle racer Clarence Cain from Deed Park, prompting an attempted poisoning at a saloon. Cain and Agnes return to set matters right as Gavin’s condition remains grave but the couple has support from Mrs Cain and others.
A Ladysmith dispatch reports Lord Wolseley noting General Yule retreat to Glencoe Junction amid a looming confrontation with General Joubert's main Boer army. The British may detach part of their force from Elandslaagte, leaving Lady Smith exposed to western threats as General Hunter warns of limited protection after a force move to Klandsteagte.
