Gerald Wingert 18 months old, Sioux City, died after drinking fry spray containing pyrethrum, a deadly poison. A physician said the spray was in a bottle and burned the inside of the boy’s mouth. He was taken to a hospital. he is survived by two brothers.
Hedrick Iowa Rev M D Cox 65 longtime Hedrick Methodist pastor died of a heart attack at his home Tuesday Surviving are his wife a daughter Elizabeth and a brother Rev Guy Cox of Lee Center Ia He previously served pastorates at Agency Murray Keosauqua Sigourney North English and several other Iowa towns.
District Judge H C Taylor reversed a Iowa commerce commission ruling that granted a certificate of convenience and necessity to Rock Island Motor Transit Co to operate between Iowa points. The commission issued the order May 14 1940 and Burlington Transportation Co appealed shortly after. The appeal was argued July 1940.
Leon Iowa reports the death of Jonah Hoffhines a cen tenarian and last Civil War veteran in Decatur county. The city proclaimed July 10 as Hoffhines day after he celebrated his century birthday at a public Harve y park reception with Gov George Wilson as guest speaker. Hoffhines came to Iowa from Illinois aboard the first Burlington railroad train on the Ottumwa and Osceola line and traveled from Osceola to Leon by stage coach.
Summerlike weather continued in Iowa with highs mainly in the eighties. Newton reported 87 degrees while Des Moines reached 86, nearing the October 22 all time mark. Other readings included 86 at Ottumwa 85 at Columbus Junction and Corning 84 at Davenport and Malvern 83 at Mount Ayr and Burlington.
Belew 24 farm hand on Harold Bohrosen farm seven miles northeast of here. his right hand caught in attached corn picker as he tried to remove an ear. He shut off machine and drove tractor with left hand to the farmhouse. a garage man released the hand after removing the roller. Severe lacerations but no amputation.
Eloise Alley, 23 month old daughter of Mr and Mrs Dale Alley, living west of Allerton, died Tuesday after falling into a stock water tank. She is survived by her parents and two brothers.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry McCall and Mrs. Wahneetah Ingalls left early this week by car for Tampa Florida where they will spend the winter.

Richard McCleery will introduce him and the public is invited to attend. The meeting should finish by nine.
County Superintendent Lester B Krabill announced a county meeting for rural teachers to be held at the courthouse Saturday at nine in the morning. It is the second session of the school year with Dr Keith Goltry from Parsons College on the faculty expected to attend.
Royce Lyons of Keota won the Washington county corn husking contest and the district title at Cotter Bros farm near Wapello among 13 contestants. His 80 minute haul totaled 2,610.5 pounds or 87.29 bushels with a gross 2,750 pounds and 139.5 pounds deductions. Ralph Keppy of Scott county placed second and Eldred Stallman of Linn third, with a crowd of about 1,500 watching under hot skies. Lyons earns a spot in the state contest near Mitchellville.

Thomas Jefferson Bell of Huron was sentenced by Judge P. J. Siegers in Sigourney to up to ten years in the Anamosa men's reformatory after pleading guilty to larceny of an automobile in Washington county and breaking and entering in Keokuk county. The terms run concurrently. Bell admitted stealing a car from Steinbeck garage in Rubio and stealing gasoline after breaking into a What Cheer filling station.
The Journal prints 2169 Washington county draft registrants with serial numbers assigned last Wednesday. The list, prepared by the selective service board, is posted at the board’s office and sent to Governor George Wilson. It spans over three pages and may include a few additional names from other counties.
