A Cedar Rapids column notes services for Donald Gruhn nine who died after being thrown from a saddle horse at Beverly Iowa Sunday evening. Burial planned at Matcom ta with services in Cedar Rapids this afternoon.
Des Moines convention of the Iowa Chiropractic Association draws over 200 delegates. Resolutions press for recognition in tax supported hospitals corrections homes and institutions for the feebleminded. They seek inclusion of chiropractic in school examinations and treatments on equal terms with medicine and dentistry.
Thirteen of seventeen top Iowa huskers earn finals spots for Friday showdown at Mitchellville. defending champ Alvin Roberts of Atakawa enters automatically. winners and runners up from six district contests advance, with two more districts to contest Wednesday.
DES MOINES Action on the Moscow dam permit was postponed by the Iowa executive council at the request of Gregory Brunk attorney for the project financer. Gov Wilson asked Brunk and Chief Engineer Fred White for progress in engineering studies and Brunk said at least two more weeks are needed to complete the studies underway.
Des Moines report says Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr. planned to address Drake University students at Varsity theater near the campus at 9 am today. Drake President Dr. B D Morehouse opposed the campus talk citing a long standing policy that controversial issues are not discussed on campus.
Des Moines state health officials on Monday said infantile paralysis is on the way out after a sharp drop in cases. Five new cases were reported statewide, including a 5 year old in Lansing and a 21 year old in Calmar, with Cerro Gordo county also reporting infections.
Berlin says Germany and Italy aim to bring Spain closer to the axis with von Ribbentrop arriving in Spain soon possibly with an Italian spokesman. Britain combats German and Japanese attacks in the Mediterranean and Far East as Turkey pressures the Balkans and a Dover coast artillery duel continues.
Governor Harold Stassen of Minnesota will address Cedar Rapids Thursday evening at 8 15 on a program with authoress Kathleen Norris. The event, under the Associated Willkie clubs of eastern town, follows news of Governor Charles A Sprague of Oregon speaking last night at 8 30 over Station Kiw't Sioux City in support of the Willkie candidacy.
At last night’s city council meeting the focus was on automobile traffic. They discussed removing several stop signs and mapping a plan for changes. Feasibility of traffic signals at the square corners and East Washington Street and Second Avenue was considered but no decision was reached. The session was brief with routine matters dominating.
Public invited to hear Congressman Thomas B. Martin of Iowa City on national defense and selective service. The Republican meeting welcomes all parties and independent voters and runs from eight to nine on Wednesday October 23 as part of No Third Term Day with a nonpolitical 2:30 p.m. talk at the high school.
United States Ambassador Joseph P. Kennedy left London for home as British officials and papers voiced strong tributes and a sense he may not return.
Wendell L. Willkie told 40 000 to 50 000 supporters in Rockford Illinois that his opponent is growing fearful and desperate as he argues the government has been bought with the people’s money. He planned two nationwide radio addresses from Milwaukee to Chicago with Mutual and NBC red network broadcasts set for 8:30 and 9:30 p m Central Time.
Sixty four registrants were added to the Washington county draft board. The county total is now 2163. Forty came from Keokuk county due to a Keota address error while residents actually lived in Washington. Most others were from outside the state. The draft board works on a typed list of county registrants and expects completion by tomorrow.
Thomas Jefferson Bell age 20 of Huron is jailed on auto theft charges after admitting the crime. He will likely face district court this week. Bell was brought from Logan Iowa where he had just finished a sentence. He is accused of stealing a car from Steinbeck garage Rubio April 23 and abandoning it at Tama. He had been seen in Rubio and Richland before the theft. Bell also admitted breaking into a What Cheer filling station. a charge to be filed in Keokuk county. Raymond Van Landingham of Mendota Missouri was jailed after a 30 day or 100 dollar fine for violating the ant merchants law in Wellman. He claimed he applied for an Iowa certificate but had not received it.
Washington county older boys and girls hold a full day program at Kalona Methodist Church with morning worship panels on courage and youth ministry, discussion groups, a nominating committee, an afternoon session, a fellowship banquet, and a closing adjournment. Facilities include sessions led by O G Herbrecht and Beulah Sywart with participants from Crawfordsville and West Chester.
James Mitchell, 20, of Chillicothe Missouri, a member of the Corydon civilians conservation corps camp for 18 months, was found dead on Rock Island railroad tracks half a mile southwest of Corydon early Monday. His skull was fractured, suggesting a fall from or impact with a train.
In Des Moines on October 22 Franklin D Roosevelt Jr said he would not attack Willkie personally and he regards his father as a far finer man. He spoke en route to Hartley for a district corn husking contest after a Drake campus talk was moved to a cinema due to campus rules. About 500 University of Drake students skipped classes to hear him.
John Geerdes aged 79 died at his farm home three and a half miles northeast of Washington after a long illness from heart disease and pneumonia complications. Funeral services are set for 3 30 p m Wednesday at L A Jones funeral home with Rev Carl W Klein and Rev F W Eastwood presiding. burial in Elm Grove cemetery. He was born January 13 1861 in Ostfriesland Germany and immigrated in 1884, later marrying Jane Stepkes in 1887. Surviving are six children George Gridley Thomas Washington Phil Crawfordsville Harry and Tena at home Mrs John Koehler Vernon Colo and Mrs David Kleese Washington, with fifteen grandchildren and several half-siblings living in New Jersey and New York City. Three children preceded him in death. He was active in the Evangelical and Reformed church in Washington.
Chris C. Miller of Kalona died at his home yesterday afternoon at four after a heart attack. He had been in poor health for four years and funeral arrangements are pending word from a brother in Oregon. He was a retiring longtime educator and bank associate. He was a lifelong East Union Mennonite member and would have celebrated his 38th wedding anniversary with Anna Wertz tomorrow. He leaves wife, son Clifford of Moline, daughter Mrs. Marie Herner of Kalona, two grandchildren, his father M. D. Miller, three sisters and six brothers.
A court of honor by Troop 42 at Lincoln schools awarded Zed to Carroll Coffin and 1st class to Dick Peterson. Merit badges went to Ralph Schilling for camping pathfinding reading swimming and to Richard Boyer for metal work wood work wood carving. Dick Peterson earned badges in public health pioneering safety life saving swimming athletics personal health carpentry handicraft camping first aid pathfinding cooking and Star Scout ranks were given to Ralph Schilling and Dick Peterson.

Draft director Clarence Dykstra plans a large ceremony for October 29 as 17,000,000 men registered for military service will be drawn in a national lottery. A guard will escort the drawing bowl from Independence Hall Philadelphia to Washington. President Roosevelt will deliver a noon radio address and may explain the lottery and conscription in a forthcoming talk.
Tens of thousands fled their homes in Bucharest after a violent 6.0 earthquake, with staged fears of a second quake and concerns over potential damage in the Ploesti oil region. Early reports were fragmentary.

Ida May Ward 74 died at Washington county hospital after a lingering illness. Funeral held at L A Jones funeral home with Dr R C Keagy officiating, burial in Keota cemetery. She was born 1866 in Alton Illinois, married Levi Berkley Ward in 1885, lived in Washington county most of life, survived by husband, son Lee R G Ward of Wichita daughter Olive McConnell of Charlotte and Florence Parke of Duluth nine grandchildren three great grandchildren a brother Alex Moody and sister Antonette Gray. Elliott Ward died in infancy. Addresses given include 614 South Kiehth avenue.
Eslick says he sent the youth a letter last week stating that as of the close of the work day October 18, the employment is terminated. He adds that Bali was not fired for conscience but for violating a congressional act.
