In Waterloo two women fur salesmen sold an alleged fur coat to Mrs. Oscar Mullen over two days. They accepted a $50 check which Mrs. Mullen tried to stop after learning the coat was worth $5, but the check had already been cashed.
H D Hoover 865, uncle of former President Herbert Hoover, died at his Legrand home after six months of declining health. He helped raise Theodore Hoover, brother of the president, after their mother died when they were boys.
Funeral services for Rt. Rev. Monsignor William P. Shannahan will be held at Sacred Heart cathedral at 10 a.m. Monday. The body will lie in St. Marguerite's chapel in the church until services. Shannahan, former president of St. Ambrose College for eight years and philosophy professor, was born February 2, 1870 in Muscatine county.
Fairfield high school reversed plans and cancelled a special train to Davenport for the district music contest. Washington and Fairfield bands prepared to travel by car after the railroad option was dropped amid expense concerns.
Charles Arnold longtime Brighton resident died at his home from a paralysis stroke. Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 pm at the home with Rev. R. W. Fillmore officiating. Burial in Hillcrest cemetery. He was born July 19, 1867, a brickmason by trade, survived by his widow six children and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
It is expected the group will be able to return home late this afternoon or early in the evening.
Sheriff H. M. Putnam arrested Francis Graf of Dubuque for Cedar Rapids on a warrant charging larceny by embezzlement. Graf had been selling books in Washington. details of the charge were not given to local officers.
Yesterday proved the most consistently cold day of the 1937 fall season in Washington with a high of 39 degrees and a low of 25 degrees, a temperature range of 11 degrees within 24 hours.
Miss Everstine Daniels, a research writer for Washington County with the Federal Writers' Project, reports an Iowa State Guide Book will be published soon. The work compiles material from reliable sources across the state in cooperation with the State Historical Society of Iowa.
Seven entrants are lined up for the county corn husking meet to be held next Wednesday October 27 at the Amial QGhabal farm eight miles northeast of town. Participants include Virgil Elmer Krantz Crawfordshire Dwight Hoyle Washington Herman Eagle Brighton Elmus Brenneman Riverside and Elmer Berger Wellman. The husking contest is slated for eleven o clock with a business men husking match at nine. County Agent W J Rouda Bush says mayors have been asked to ensure representation from all towns. Three more entries are needed to crown the county champion.

The American Red Cross plans to ship medical and surgical supplies to three 600 bed hospital units in China from San Francisco and Manila. The $1 million relief appropriation funds 50 operating cases 50 hemostats 20 portable x ray units and more, with Chinese residents and a savings association donating to the San Francisco supply fund. Ambassador Wang expresses gratitude for the relief effort and notes prior aid to flood relief.
Funeral services for John Bryson, who died Thursday afternoon, will be held at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon in the Sherman funeral home conducted by Rev I Fredmund of the Baptist church. The body will be sent to Elkhart Illinois Monday night for burial Tuesday afternoon beside his wife.

Supt E A Ralston of Washington public schools and relatives were deeply shaken by a Renwick high school disaster in which ten students were killed and others injured. Ralston had served six years as Renwick superintendent and knew the victims who were about his son Francis age.
A school bus carrying Renwick high school students collided with the Rock Island Rocket near a private crossing in Mason City. Ten students died, including Lillian Cedar, 15, and eighteen others were injured. investigation begun to determine fault.
