Le Mars Clayton Stine 15 son of Mr and Mrs Al Workman died after losing grip on a swing at the high school. He fell and broke his neck in the nurse's office. His father is a local barber.
Mae Sculte Hornick sues for divorce from John Schulte and asks for possession of three cows and one pig, custody of three children, $24 monthly alimony, 200 bushels of oats, and farm machinery.
Council Bluffs resident M C Schlott paid a month's rent to landlady Mrs Helen Ovington and said he had a roof for another month. On returning with his son Dickie the house was badly damaged and they sought shelter with neighbors.
Cedar Rapids officer T. A. Kelley issued summons tickets to advertise his oil station. Police objected and issued a real summons. Kelley paid a $5 fine. The tickets were replicas of officer traffic offense tags.
Siotux City Edson L Glau 43 pleaded guilty to embezzling 3424 of postal savings funds while postmaster at Charter Oak and was sentenced by Federal Judge rege Cc Scott to one year and a day in Leavenworth. Government agents said Glau paid a 1000 fine in 1930 for embezzling funds of the National Tea Co in Dubuque.
Iowa State College announces a fall enrollment of 6 454 students a rise of 13 percent from last year. Registrar J R Sage reports 3 787 men and 1 576 women enrolled with a total of 4 808 students at the same point a year ago.
Organized by Emmetsburg business leaders the protest targets Mayor Hand’s traffic enforcement. Council may intervene as merchants claim the drive harms local business and authority over motorists.
Pope Pius XI praised Mother Frances Cabrini founder of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus for heroic Christian virtue. Cabrini, credited with two miracles, died in New York City in 1917 and remains a candidate for canonization.
The Black Watch bagpipers from the University of Iowa will appear at the Washington County Iowa Alumni banquet on November 1. Col. G F N Daley, head of ROTC, admired their Edinburgh performance in 1905 and formed the unit two years ago. The group will wear imported uniforms and may perform a Scottish dance at Homecoming. A turkey dinner is planned at the Methodist church with tickets at 75 cents.
Mt. Pleasant minister Rev J H Nightengale spoke to about 90 men at the Methodist church men’s club on a travelogue style trip to Russia. The meeting honored Lewis Warren for his election as International president of Y’s Men’s clubs with a fountain pen.
John Bryson 80 died suddenly yesterday afternoon of a heart ailment at a garage door in Washington. Funeral plans are pending word from relatives. Born June 26 1857 at Bonaparte Iowa, he lived in Keota before moving to Washington in 1901. He worked in horse buying and later painting and was a Baptist and Knights of Pythias member. Survived by two sisters, five nephews and four nieces.
Dr. John Hamilton 66 a Cedar Rapids surgeon died at University hospital today He served on the staff of the Iowa college of medicine from 1908 to 1914
Court notice published in the Journal shows a sale to Fred L. Moore of the east side square shoe store building. Transfer set for November 1 unless creditors object. purchase price listed as $12,000. Deal arranged by George Breitenbach, assignee.
Judge P G Siegers presided in New Town holding court in Washington and planning a return on November 3. Rex Nickerson was granted a divorce from Lena Nickerson. The Bankers Life Insurance Company versus Edward Havel et al yielded court approval of the receiver's first report. In juvenile court Judge Siegers sentenced 14 year old Junior Palmer and 13 year old Kenneth Hunsaker to the state boys training school at Eldora until age 21 or earlier discharge. The youths, previously on parole after thieving incidents, admitted burglary of the closed Simmering tavern. Sheriff H M Putnam and the boys' fathers accompanied them to Eldora.
The American Red Cross urges nationwide support for relief of wounded and homeless non combatants in the China war zone. Contributions from this fund will be used only for this purpose and not from regular funds. Send donations to Washington Bank or the Journal office or through County Red Cross Chairman Roger Sherman.
President Roosevelt said the United States will not seek a deficiency relief appropriation for 1937-38 and will stay within the 1.5 billion dollar relief appropriation for the current fiscal year. He noted the 1938 to 1939 budget is hoped balanced despite revised estimates and said the treasury is studying the tax situation with reports due for Congress’s special session.
Dr Charles KR Brown dean emeritus of Yale Divinity School will return to the University of Iowa for his annual vespers address Sunday at 8 pm. WSUI will broadcast. Brown directed Yale Divinity 1911 1928 and authored My Own Yesterday s and Finding Ourselves in 1931 35.
Dean Brown known for addresses sermons and lectures in Washington. he was born and raised on a farm northwest of town.
Four Democratic members of Iowa’s last legislature face questions over holding state and federal paid posts while serving. I G Crystal, R G Moore, C L Beckler and T I Kephart reportedly draw monthly salaries for roles in Governor Kraschel’s emergency conservation fund, animal industry, unemployed compensation commission, and related offices. The legality is under review per an Iowa constitution clause limiting holding lucrative offices during a term.
Dr. Lorene Breed, 74, daughter of Rev. James Wood a former Ainsworth Baptist minister, died in California. Born near Fairfield she lived in Ainsworth where sister Mrs. Will Marr resides. Medical missionary in India, later practiced in California. Husband and a baby daughter preceded her in death. funeral planned in California with possible burial in Ainsworth.
Chicago reports 29 year old unwed mother Cora May Marsh confessed to police that she hurled her newborn from a ten-story incinerator shaft. She said the child was alive and crying when she dropped it to its death.
Evangelist Billy Opie will preach on the Great Tribulation Period at the Four Square Tabernacle on South Marion Avenue tonight. The event promises to draw church members seeking biblical insight.
