An open house is planned at Stewart Elementary School in Washington on Tuesday October 26 from 7 to 9 pm. Parents and friends are invited to tour rooms and meet teachers and refreshments will be served in the gymnasium by the room mothers.
Practically all retail stores will be open on October 25 for Veterans Day. Government and postal offices at all levels will be closed including city hall county courthouse post office ASC and SCS offices. The Evening Journal will be published at noon Monday.
The last week of October is National Education Week. From October 25 to 27 parents and citizens are invited to attend classes at Mid Prairie Junior High to bridge the gap between home and school and support education.
The FBI announced the arrest of five men in Missouri with help from state and local authorities in Hannibal. They were wanted in Grundy County Iowa for posing as lightning rod inspectors and defrauding an elderly farm couple.
Charles Tex Watson, 26, former high school star, was sentenced to death by the same jury that convicted him for leading the Tate-LaBianca killings. The six six-person panel also rejected his insanity plea. In a separate brief item, an Algona man Cecil Robert Crail, 25, died when his motorcycle struck a parked truck on a closed section of U.S. 169 south of Algona.
Washington officials report the consumer price index rose 0.2 percent in September, the first full month under Nixon’s wage price freeze. Most of the increase came from items not covered by the freeze, while August’s rise reflected only partial effect of the order.
President Nixon designates George H. Boldt chief judge in Seattle and C Jackson Grayson Jr. dean at Southern Methodist University to head the new pay board and price commission. The 15 member pay board includes five labor, five management, five public representatives, with Boldt and Grayson full time. The seven member price commission comprises public representatives led by Grayson with members from government and academia.
Iowa Southern Utilities Co. clarifies reports on natural gas refunds. It states refunds come from Northern Natural Gas Co. and will primarily affect Grinnell with credits around $22,000. Most gas is purchased from Michigan Wisconsin Pipeline Co and Natural Gas Pipeline Co.
American Education Week observances at Washington Community Schools include an open house Monday at the high school. Parents and friends are invited to tour the building from 7 to 9 PM, meet teachers, and view improved Industrial Arts facilities and student work on display.
Los Angeles police training officer Myron M. Bitting was named September Officer of the Month. A son of Mr and Mrs Marlin Bitting of Crawfordsville he attended Winfield High School and formerly lived in Wyman and Winfield.
Partly cloudy and cooler tonight with lows around 40 to 45. Saturday brings mostly sunny skies and mild temperatures with highs near 65 to 70. Northwest winds 5 to 10 mph. Rain chances are 20 percent tonight and 10 percent Saturday.
President Nixon nominates William H. Rehnquist and Lewis F. Powell Jr. to the Supreme Court saying a woman will join the court eventually. He notes the selections aim for a strict constructionist majority and that Senate confirmation is expected after later hearings.
A six member jury in Sigourney awarded Doyle and Gaylin Jarrard and their spouses 6500 dollars in a land condemnation case against Washington County. The suit stems from a Cedar and Jackson township road paving project needing more right of way. The county must also pay court costs.
Iowa State Board of Public Instruction voted 5 to 3 to buy the defunct Midwestern College campus in Denison for 100000, overriding a recommendation against diverting resources from Sioux City. They also rejected a liberal arts program for Western Town Technical School in Sioux City, keeping it from full community college status.
Iowa Health Commissioner Dr Arnold Reeve backs ending routine smallpox vaccinations for children. He cites U S Public Health Service findings that vaccine reactions cause more deaths than the disease. He notes 1949 as last US smallpox death and recalls vaccine-linked fatalities since then.
Union members vote 148 to 107 against the latest ISU offer as a 17 day strike by about 300 Iowa Southern Utilities workers continues. Disputes center on standby pay and lunch relief with wage gains trimmed to 7.5 and 7 percent over two years and a weekly lunch allowance up to 80 cents a day.
