Pablo Neruda the Chilean poet and diplomat today won the Nobel Prize in Literature at age 67. The Swedish Academy cited his poetry as a forceful expression of a continent's destiny and dreams. Neruda, a longtime Communist, serves as ambassador to Paris under President Allende.

Week's battle toll only five Americans
SAIGON UPI The U S military command said five Americans were killed in the Vietnam war last week the lowest weekly combat toll in more than six years. It was the second straight week with under 10 GIs killed and brought total American deaths to 45 577 since Jan 1 1961. The toll was the lowest since Aug 7 1965 when three died in combat. The South Vietnamese reported 391 killed the highest in five weeks as fighting continued along the Cambodian border. Another 84 U S servicemen were wounded and 15 died in nonhostile causes such as accidents and illness.

Iowa faces teacher surplus as population growth trends slow

Shots Fired Into Soviet UN Offices In New York
Four shots pierced the Soviet Mission to the United Nations in Manhattan injuring no one as bullets struck a wall near sleeping children.
