Johnson visit to Sydney marred by antiwar protests crowd

President Johnson drew the largest welcome in Australian history as crowds thronged Sydney streets. A violent protest scene erupted outside an art gallery with demonstrators throwing objects at the president's limousine and police clashing with crowds. Police and security agents hauled away dozens as guards shielded Johnson who shouted to the crowd from the vehicle.

Illinois coed crowned homecoming queen at the University of Iowa

Nancy Lou Moore of Homewood Illinois a 19 year old junior in liberal arts at the University of Iowa was crowned homecoming queen at campus festivities Friday night She was chosen from four finalists and will preside over events including the Northwestern football game and a student union dance.

Tragedy at Aberfan as Welsh village mourns children

UPI reports in Aberfan Wales a catastrophic slag heap slide buried a school and many homes, killing or entombing scores of children aged 5 to 11 and several adults. Rescue teams fought mud, weather, and collapsing debris as parents gathered at a candlelit chapel awaiting news.

Four Strohman children taken to juvenile home after Davenport chase

James Strohman and wife Mary Anna arrested following a rural Scott County pursuit. Strohman charged with forgery, threatening an officer with a gun, and carrying a concealed weapon. Four 16 year old boys who witnessed the incident aided police before the suspects fled.

Two women sue Fairwood General Hospital in Wayne County circuit court for damages totaling 1.7 million alleging unlicensed doctors and nurses performed unnecessary operations. Mary Lewis seeks 1 million claiming partial stomach removal and continuing disabilities. Lucile Barefoot seeks 760,009 for multiple procedures, including alleged skull surgery later disputed.

Toll in latest battle claims many Viet Cong killed

News dispatch reports 984 Viet Cong slain in five days as U S planes and South Vietnamese troops hunt guerrillas 340 miles northeast of Saigon. The tally includes 500 credited to U S air power, with 125 barges damaged off North Vietnam and 64 Viet Cong killed in Operation Irving along the coast.

New missiles for Viet Nam aid from Moscow

Report from Moscow states the Soviet Union and allied governments plan to supply North Vietnam with modern weapons possibly including new missiles. A communique after the summit highlighted demonstrations of tactical weapons at an Army base near Moscow and a secret space center in Baikonur. Delegates from Cuba Mongolia and six Warsaw Pact nations attended the deliberations.

Murray hits money policies of Hughes

SHENANDUAN IOWA UPD William G. Murray Friday night urged Gov Harold E Hughes to justify the states tax and license increases. He accused the governor of signing laws raising cigarette tax the driver license the sales tax and other levies. Murray said the budget surplus will exceed 80 million with no explanation from the governor.

Iowa Weather This Weekend Clear and Cool

United Press International reports Iowa will see clear to partly cloudy skies tonight and Sunday. Cooler tonight with northwest winds 20 to 30 mph diminishing after dark. Lows range from 40 to 45 in the northwest to around 50 in the southeast. Sunday highs expected in the 60s.

Khoman Signals Possible Peace Talks Ahead at Manila Summit

Thai Foreign Minister Thanat Khoman arrived for the Manila summit saying some Communist-side figures might consider a peaceful settlement though evidence is not solid. He noted a pause in bombing could be discussed, while Hanoi denounced the conference as war escalation. U.S. Secretary Rusk said no decision yet on a bombing pause as Johnson prepared to meet leaders from Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Thailand and South Vietnam.
