Farmer Loses Hand in Harvest Accident
Paul Holmes a 64 year old farmer west of Richland lost his right hand in a corn picker accident Wednesday evening. Alone after 5:30 he was entangled for about ninety minutes before freeing himself by cutting off his fingers. He drove to his son Dennis home then to Fairfield hospital and finally Ottumwa hospital where the hand was amputated at the wrist.

Sister Mary Gregory dies in Ottumwa obituary
RIVERSIDE Sister Mary Gregory CHM 81 died Wednesday at St Josephs Hospital in Ottumwa. Gertrude Schnoebelen born near Riverside December 2, 1882, daughter of Gregory and Josephine Warlaumont Schnoebelen. Entered the convent in 1911 and marked her 50th year as a nun in January. Taught school in Marshalltown Fort Madison and Stuart before retirement seven years ago. Survived by a number of nieces and nephews. three brothers and four sisters preceded her in death. Services 10:30 a m in Magnificat Chapel Ottumwa Heights. Burial in the cemetery there.

A one four powered nuclear device was detonated 2700 feet underground near Baxterville Mississippi at 10 am CST. The five kiloton blast lifted dust into a puff above the site and slightly rocked nearby Baxterville. About 400 people were evacuated as seismographs recorded the shock from southeast Mississippi to western Europe.
