The Supreme Court refused to hear Virginia Minnesota appealed ruling challenging a city hospital ban on abortions except to save the mother’s life. The 8th Circuit upheld the hospital abortion restrictions citing doctors’ rights and medical practice standards.
The Republican Party in Washington County opened its 1974 campaign headquarters in the Davis and Palmer Real Estate office on the south side of the Washington business district. Workers will staff afternoons Monday through Saturday and Thursday evenings to provide information on GOP candidates and answer election questions. Central Committee Chairman Lawrence Miksch announced the office, with Mrs. Niva Campbell aiding setup, will be open through election day November 5.
The state Supreme Court upholds a five year residency requirement for governor candidates, denying Charles D Ravenel a place on the November ballot after his Democratic primary win. The decision bases eligibility on the constitutional residency clause.
President Ford crosses the border to discuss migrant workers narcotics and mutual concerns with Mexican President Luis Echeverria in Nogales Sonora. The leaders shuttle by helicopter to Magdalena for day long talks in Arizona and Sonora as Kissinger accompanies them.
UPI reports President Ford’s claim that recycled garbage could ease the energy shortage. Thomas Willson of the American Iron and Steel Institute argues that converting and recycling all U.S. garbage could yield energy equal to two thirds of oil imports, aiding Ford’s plan to cut oil use by one million barrels daily by 1975. He cites a $5 billion annual waste bill but a potential $1 billion in scrap value for mills.
In Washington the Nixon camp argues five year destruction is barred by a government agreement. Nixon's attorney says the death clause cannot trigger destruction before five years pass, while opponents seek a restraining order to move tapes to the West Coast. The case involves interpretation of a ownership deal with the GSA and gives Nixon potential sole access to materials.
Al Swarthout released the 1975 Chest budget detailing YMCA at 17000 dollars or 43 percent of the 39900 goal. YWCA gets 6500, Red Cross 4900, and 11 other groups share the rest. Contingencies and admin costs total 1250 each. Swarthout hopes for strong business and industrial support.
Washington UPI report details a March 21 1973 White House meeting where Nixon urged John Dean to issue a broad statement denying aides’ complicity while admitting some did. Ehrlichman Haldeman and others debated immunity and a formal white paper approach as the trial progresses.

Open house at Washington district schools begins this week as part of American Education Week with the high school opening tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. Parents will join discussions on the self scheduling program and small group talks. Additional open houses planned at Stewart, Brighton, James, and Lincoln Schools with dates through late October.
The Washington Community School District board will hold its regular meeting Wednesday night at 8 p.m., delayed by open house turnout, with a short agenda focusing on a junior high baseball field project and the annual report. The district’s new central office at 404 W. Main St. hosts the open house from 3:30 to 9 p.m.
The 84 member Washington High School marching band finished second in the Class AA street marching division at Northeast Missouri State University Homecoming Festival in Kirksville. Canton district won. Mt. Pleasant took Class AAA. Judges praised the band's discipline and poise amid bands from Des Moines to St. Louis.
McGregor Democrat Thomas Miller campaigns vigorously to unseat incumbent Attorney General Richard Turner. Miller accuses Turner of misaligned priorities and calls for focused office actions on oil and gas prices, fertilizer costs, and securities regulation. Turner defends record, touts consumer protection, and questions Miller’s inexperience. Miller has "about $35,000" spent, while Turner emphasizes policy over personality.
