Missile test launches Midas satellite with 350 million wires
A Midas satellite carrying 350 million ultra fine wires rode into space on a 91 foot Atlas Agena B rocket. The test known as Project West Ford aims to warn of enemy missile firings and to create a new communications band around Earth. The 350 million wires weigh 75 pounds and could help build a tin ionosphere while the 3 500 pound Midas IV serves as a missile defense alarm system.

Trucker Dies in Flaming Tanker Crash at I 141 Junction
James Dean Blumberg 28 of Boone died trapped in a burning overturned semi tanker carrying 7500 gallons of gasoline at the Iowa 141 and 60 junction near Granger. Forest Gray, Des Moines, escaped injury as the crash damaged the road and firefighters battled the blaze for 90 minutes.

West Liberty Youth Killed in Collision
Don ald Paul Oberman 19 of rural West Liberty died Friday night in a two pickup crash at an unmarked gravel road intersection three miles southwest of West Liberty. Harvey Shaeffer of Muscatine, in Oberman’s truck, remained in good condition today at University Hospitals Iowa City. Arthur Stover of West Liberty, driver of the other truck, was not injured. A Muscatine County sheriff deputy said there was no stop sign at the intersection.

Paratroopers Hurt In Mass Jump At Fort Jackson
Twenty one paratroopers from the 2nd Battle Group 501st Infantry 82nd Airborne Division were hospitalized after a mass jump during Exercise Apache at Fort Jackson South Carolina.
