Dr Charles E B Fri ley president of Iowa State College accepts chairmanship of the Iowa Rhodes scholarship committee to select 1939 candidates for Rhodes scholarships to Oxford England.
Mrs May Montgomery Smith a widow died several hours after being struck by a car driven by Mayor George W Darling. She stepped into the path of the car in front of her home.
Waterloo deputies say they halted a marijuana cigarrette operation linked to Sam Cozart age 24 after making two undercover purchases. Cozart allegedly sold marijuana cigarets at 25 cents each.
Leonard Daniels, 21, of Ida Grove Iowa confessed to traveling from Beaver Dam Wisconsin to St. Louis to have a good time after stealing 515 from his employer. He said he worked in a Beaver Dam store for 12 dollars weekly prior to the trip.
Joseph F. Gillespie of Des Moines was fined $100 and costs in Burlington police court for fraud involving slugs used to pay long distance calls. He repaid Northwestern Bell $42 for slugs found in pay phones after an investigation led by H. J. Knight.
Ottumwa residents Raymond K. Greeson and Bertha Holder were arraigned on federal counts of possessing transporting and distilling spirits without revenue stamps and remain free on bonds. Clayton Wills of North Dakota was held on Dyer Act violation charges.
Alvin Roberts of Muscatine wins the annual Muscatine county corn husking contest with 2 374 4 pounds net. Runner up Charles White of Muscatine finishes with 2 156 4 pounds. Roberts notes the birth of his 9 pound son before the event.
Des Moines estimates put the cost of maintaining the national guard on strike duty at Sioux City at about 2200 dollars per day. Officials say the first days may total about 2500 dollars daily, with costs later leveling near 2000 dollars. Camp Anderson at Newton for Maytag labor dispute guards is assessed at 26000 dollars.
A three year old White Leghorn hen from Logan laid a five ounce egg seven and a half inches around and weighing twice an ordinary egg. The hen died after the feat, the event drawing attention to Logan championship aspirations of Mrs. Roy Vore.
Clinton boy Robert Friis twelve crawled into a deserted freight car in railroad yards near Clinton. The car began moving trapping him inside until the door slammed and the train stopped. He made his way out in Chicago and sought help at a police station where he was assisted by officers.
Swift packing company officials agreed to meet CIO union heads at four o clock Saturday to discuss the strike that has kept the Sioux City Swift plant closed since Sept. 29. The letter warned this will be the eleventh meeting with no offer from the union and notes the dispute centers on reinstating 163 discharged workers and wage protections amid National Guard involvement.
Col Percy E Van Nostrand 51 born in Washington Iowa died at Mare Island field California. A graduate of the Army War College 1933 he held multiple posts including assistant commandant of Chanute Field and chief roles in the balloon and airship division and military intelligence. War department awaiting funeral arrangements with relatives. Mrs G L McClellan of Lodge Nebraska staying with aunt Mrs Joseph Wolf.

William M. Baxter Jr of St Louis Mo, named manager of the Midwest Red Cross region for relief work. He led the central wheat distribution office handling 85,000,000 bushels of Farm Board wheat and distributing flour to Red Cross chapters nationwide. Baxter joined the Red Cross before World War I.
Washington County Red Cross roll call chair reports expanded work by nurses and volunteers. During the year 659,187 school children were examined and 295,028 people trained in first aid and life saving. Red Cross aided 108,000 disaster victims with care and relief across eight states.
A violent typhoon across Japan killed at least 226 people and left 40,000 homeless in Kagoshima Prefecture. Tokyo counted 10,000 flooded houses, with 227 missing and 692 injured. Seven vessels expected at Yokohama did not arrive. one steamer was driven into the breakwater, prompting rescue efforts.
Lowell Leichty six son of Rev Willard Leichty was struck by a car driven by neighbor Peter Krabill near the Leichty home after leaving a school bus. He suffered a fractured left leg, head wounds, and gravel burns, taken to a Wayland physician for X rays.

Truck operators from southeastern Iowa will convene in Washington on Monday at 1 PM at the courthouse, the first of four statewide meetings called by the Iowa state commerce commission. The sessions aim to gauge support for uniform intrastate rates on livestock, grain and commodities before a formal hearing on rates.
The standard milk ordinance from the U S Public Health Service is in force in over 800 U S cities and towns and has been adopted by Ottumwa Burlington Fort Dodge Ames and Washington Iowa.
