James Raymond Brooks, 41, of Durant, was killed when his car left U.S. 30 on a curve three miles west of Mechanicsville. He was alone and died later at a Cedar Rapids hospital after being thrown from the vehicle.
University of Iowa officials said two hydraulic researchers, Associate Prof. V C Patel and Assistant Prof. S C Jain, received a 68230 dollar grant to study a combined dry and wet cooling tower. The project aims to provide an efficient method for removing waste heat from power plants and assess economic feasibility.
A Knoxville man identified as Steven Coxe, 19, was killed when his car collided with a train at an unmarked crossing late Thursday night. The driver, 19-year-old Danny Gilchrist, sustained a minor injury.
Democratic US Senate candidate Dick Clark told the Iowa State Education Association convention that relief of local property taxes would come by shifting a larger share of local school costs to the federal government. He noted current funding shows about 52 percent of school costs from local property taxes, 41 percent from state sources, and 7 percent from federal aid.
Saigon officials report President Nguyen Van Thieu told lawmakers Nixon rejected a pre election cease-fire offer from North Vietnam. Thieu warned a pre election truce may help Communists, while Kissinger pressed Thieu after Paris talks. Thien noted Nixon would have four more years to push an end to the war if defeated.
A blaze at the Bain home started while Mrs. Bain lit a stove, leaving the house a total loss though some furniture was saved. Earlier, a kennel fire at Mr. and Mrs. Harold Kauffman’s west town home killed 56 Yorkshire terriers and 2 more died in the kitchen, with garage and kennel also destroyed. Firefighters worked five hours, with no injuries reported in the Kauffman fire and unknown origin.
President Nixon signed a 30.2 million five year revenue sharing bill at Independence Hall with governors mayors and civic leaders present. Treasury will mail first checks to 38 000 state local entities. Nixon said the program will help governments deliver and close the gap between promise and performance.
The phantom Pennsylvania poet sent a teletyped tribute on the season's first snow and a weather wrap. The report notes President Nixon, in Philadelphia for a nonpolitical appearance, outlined a new $5.3 billion aid program to cut taxes and fund schools, police, and public services with no strings attached.
STOCKHOLM UPI six American scientists won Nobel Prizes in chemistry and physics. John Bardeen Leon Cooper and John Schrieffer shared the physics prize for superconductivity while Christian Anfinsen Stanford Moore and William Stein shared the chemistry prize for ribonuclease structure and enzymatic activity.
State Board of Regents approved preliminary plans for a seven story general hospital addition at University Hospitals to meet rising health care needs. The plan is part of a 156 million expansion including a cardiovascular laboratory and a joint art center and alumni association headquarters funded by donations and bonds. The arts center will feature galleries funded by a 1971 Carver gift, while the cardiovascular lab will rely largely on federal money and university bonding.

Despite progress reports, unions plan brief strikes to pressure concessions while negotiators reconvene. The action follows a string of long weekend work stoppages observed across Michigan and Wisconsin affiliates.
