Refugee boats ask assistance in Florida Straits
Coast Guard units raced to aid three small boats in distress about 40 to 50 miles south of Key West in the Florida Straits. One boat carried refugees leaving Cuba, the first since Monday, while the other two were en route to Cuba from Florida. a third vessel, Jalapa, docked with four Cuban exiles rescued from a leaky craft. Cuban radio said 11 more small boats arrived to pick up refugees, but departures in the area were unexpectedly uneven.

Klan Leader Refuses to Answer at House Hearing on Alabama Radio Network

Moslems Denounce China as Indonesia Strife Eases
Hundreds of Moslem youths denounced Communist China and the Indonesian Communist Party at a rally opposite the U.S. and British embassies in Jakarta. Police barred marchers from the ambassadors’ homes after the rally, while speakers criticized Red China for backing the failed coup against President Sukarno. The army said PKI leader D. N. Aidit remained at large, and rebel forces reportedly killed two army officers in Jogjakarta during the abortive coup.

Crawfordsville Man Injured in Fall
Henry Crooks, 92, of Crawfordsville, fractured his shoulder and pelvis in a fall at his home Tuesday evening. He was taken to Washington County Hospital after summoning his daughter Mabel Monson. He had been in good health and walked daily through town.

Methodist Choir Joins Festival At Mt Pleasant
Seventeen or more members of the Washington Methodist church choir will participate in a 200 voice festival choir at the Methodist Church in Mt Pleasant at 8 p m October 24. Heavenly Display As Comet Ikeya-Seki Winds The Sky
The comet Ikeya-Seki will sweep across North American skies today and Thursday in what astronomers call the century’s greatest show. Crop drive opens in Washington County
A CROP canvass training was held at the Baptist Christian Church in Kalona on October 18 for Washington County volunteers. The drive runs October 20 through 30 with rural residents expected to receive calls from canvassers. Since 1947 CROP and Church World Service have collected food and clothing for refugees and disaster victims in over 600 communities in 30+ countries. World population boom demands more food production
An Iowa State University professor told the Ames Extension Conference that global population growth necessitates a 22 percent rise in world food production by 1975. He urged expanding cropland use, better storage, pricing systems, and use of crop residues to meet deficits while adjusting farming to changing land use and livestock needs.
